It is located on the east side of Kane County, about halfway between Chicago and Glen Ellyn. The first settlers in Edwardsville were Levi Hodge and his family who arrived in 1837. In 1854, John Crain established a sawmill and grist mill on the north shore of the Kankakee River. In 1865, Edwin Ayer bought a tract of land south of town from Jellico Robinson and began to grow corn and wheat there. A post office called Edwardsville was established in 1872, but it was discontinued operation in 1880. The name "Edwardsville" was derived from Jesse Edwards (1810-1875), a local merchant who had settled near the current site of the town in 1836. The present spelling was chosen by trustees for convenience when they decided to change the name of one of their townships after General Ulysses S. Grant (1814- 1893). In 1890, two new settlements were founded on opposite banks of the Kankakee River: West Aurora with 476 residents and East Aurora with 534 residents; both became known as "Edwardsvillians." These two villages soon amalgamated to form what is now Edwardsville Township. The township's first officer was Wm Halsey Smith who served from 1870 until his death in 1888; he was followed by Mabel Robertson until her death in 1925; then by Addison Sprague until his death in 1935; next came Harry Ladd until his retirement effective date May 1, 1969. According to2010 census data*, 62% (of its total population) lives within city limits while 38% lives within 10 miles radius or less than 15 minutes away by car or bus; only 3% reside outside these boundaries which includes all rural areas surrounding Kane County including those within Dixon Township which make up much of eastern Kane County as well as parts of Cook county across Lake Michigan
