In 1924, a large dam was built on the White River, which caused a change in the demographics of the town; previously it had been a farming community composed mostly of German and Irish immigrants. Afterward, many African Americans were brought into the area as slaves or workers during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The modern incarnation of Edwardsville began to form after World War II when businesses started opening up throughout Illinois looking for an area with good economic prospects that would be willing to open up its borders to new residents - specifically people from out of state who had come seeking opportunity and opportunities unavailable to them back home. One such business owner was Jack Bowers who purchased land east of town line on Whitney Road and constructed what became known as The Jungle Casino (later renamed The Palace). With this type of business venture came new life into what had originally been just a small agricultural community; not only did these businesses bring jobs and revenue but they also helped contribute towards socialization changes that took place within their respective communities thanks to those working within them: more kids were taught about basic human rights than they ever would have been otherwise; better housing prices sprang up throughout this area thanks to people coming here looking for stability rather then constantly moving around; most importantly, African American families were able to build successful lives here without havingto face discrimination or racism on a daily basis
