Edwardsville was founded in 1849 by Solomon Edwards and his brother John. The first settlers were the Edwards brothers, three men who drove a wagonload of goods from Kentucky to Illinois. They named their settlement after George Washington Edwards, one of the original proprietors of what is now Louisville, Kentucky. The town’s significant development came about because of its location on the main line between Chicago and St. Louis.
