The city of Carbondale lies just outside of town on the opposite side of Interstate 74 from Edwardsville proper - but it is hardly necessary for daily life: all one needs to do is exit I-74 at Exit 131B (North Avenue), walk about 3 miles east on North Avenue until one arrives at Carbondale's vibrant downtown district - filled with art galleries, theaters and restaurants - whereupon one continues walking for another 2 blocks before reaching finally Edisonsville's limits!
