In 1861, when Illinois became a state, Edwardsville voted to secede from Indiana and become its own independent republic; this did not happen because of strong support from the local government in Indianapolis or other parts of Indiana that remained loyal to the Union while Edwardsville seceded. In 1865, following General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, Edwardsville became one of nine counties within Confederate Illinois which were placed under military occupation by General Zachary Taylor during the Civil War; these areas continued to be administered by Confederate officials until late 1865 when Union troops returned them back into Union control. The town entered into an affiliation agreement with neighboring Carbondale on February 1, 1907 which allowed Carbondale residents access to all public schools within Edwardsville except Reformed Presbyterian Church which operated their own school system outside of Edmondsvill
