Fresh roasted coffee beans are a centuries old tradition in the city of East St. Louis, Illinois. The first fresh roasted coffee beans were stored in small roasters called "The old cooper." The Cooper Roasters was founded in 1881 by two brothers, Isaac and Lewis Cooper. They roamed the country buying and selling coffee. In 1916, they moved to what is now known as First National Bank Park in East St. Louis and continued to roast their own beans until 1933 when they merged with another small roaster, The Grapesmiths Coffee Company. From 1933-1978, The Grapesmiths Coffee Company was owned by Harry Smith who also ran the local grocery store on Third Street in East St.Louis. It was during this time that some of the most famous brands from East St. Louis were born: Caravan Coffee, Dutch Bros., Joe's Pizza, Bob's Red Mill Cafe etc.—all thanks to Harry Smith’s passion for fresh roasted coffee! In 1978, Harry Smith passed away and his son Barry took over ownership of the company which then changed its name to Bruce’s Beanery Incorporated (BBI). BBI continues to roast their own beans today and process them at their full-erton plant located near downtownEast St. Louis!

The first coffee shop in East St. Louis was opened by Isaac J. Levy and his partner, Abraham Cahan in 1876. Coffee became popular in the city and Levy started to offer a variety of products including iced coffee, pastries, and sandwiches. The first cafe also served as a meeting place for business owners and residents of the city. In 1915, Levy opened the first grocery store in East St. Louis; it was later renamed the East Side Market supermarket after its location on the east side of town. The popularity of coffee continued to grow throughout the 20th century with more cafes opening up and businesses expanding their services into groceries and other areas of retail sales. In 1984, Levy died at age 94 followed by his son Abraham who continued to operate the business until 1993 when it was sold to a group of investors who reopened it as an Italian restaurant called La Scala that same year.

The town began to grow rapidly due to its location near Missouri River water supplies and access to markets in nearby Decatur and Rockford counties. As East St. Louis grew increasingly popular as a center for commerce and culture, it began to attract attention from outside the United States – most notably from Europe during the 19th century railroad boom period. In 1854, Englishman John Pemberton purchased land in East St., which he plans to use as an agricultural colony for his new company, London & North American Railway (L&N). This marked the beginning of an important relationship between L&N and East St., which would last until L&N's demise in 1971."
East St. Louis was founded in 1817 by the brothers Elijah and Isaac Edwards. The city was named for the east side of the river that had been granted to them by the state of Illinois. In 1835, East St. Louis became a town and was renamed West St. Louis after its western neighbor. In 1847, East St. Louis became an independent city and was renamed East Saint Louis after its original settlement on the east side of the river.
