The site for present-day East Peoria was chosen because it would be close to other settlements in the area and its location near an important railway junction ensured its growth. In 1872, railroad entrepreneur John Prentice donated land to the city for a station and street grid development. By 1915, East Peoria had developed into a large town with over 100 businesses and over 1,000 residents. During World War II, East Peoria played an important role in the war effort by providing housing for soldiers and civilians who were needed in nearby locations such as Stroudsburg and Danville. The city also hosted events such as concerts and parades that helped celebrate America's victory over Nazi Germany. After the war ended, EastPeori resumed its normal growth rate until 1990 when it experienced adecline in population due to economic hard times throughout Illinois."
