It was on July 22, 1954 when the United States Air Force's 5th Airlift Wing activated at East Peoria Municipal Airport. It would be the first time a USAF unit had been stationed in Peoria since World War II. With its arrival of bomber aircraft and new cargo planes, the wing helped to fill the hole left by the closing of Eastern Illinois Airport. The wing also became responsible for providing airlift to U.S. embassies and other international facilities in Central and South America as well as supporting NATO operations in Europe. The wing's days were numbered; however, it would still play an important role in American aviation history through its memory system, which remains in use today. The 5th Airlift Wing Foundation is currently working to restore and operate three original Boeing 747-30s used by the wing between 1974-1996. These aircraft are unique artifacts that remind us of all that has come before at East Peoria Municipal Airport - from training our airbornecomponentsofthearmytosupportnational defenseandpromotinginternational tradeand tourism; these days we enjoy a variety of flights into& outofeastpeoriainnuvial airspaceeveryday!

The East Peoria, Illinois Air Force Base gift history began in the early 1940s. In 1941, the base was founded as the Peoria Army Air Field and it became an air force station in 1944. The air force station served as a training ground for pilots and aircraft until 1946. From 1946 to 1971, the air force station served as a research center for aeronautical engineering and technological innovations. In 1971, the air force base was closed and turned over to the local government. The local government renamed it East Peoria Municipal Airport. It has been used by various airlines since then including American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Frontier Airlines.
Peoria, Illinois is a city located in the east central part of the United States. As of 2010, the population was over 154,000 people and its metropolitan area had a population of 614,813. Peoria is bordered by Rockford to the north, Carbondale to the west, DeKalb County to the south and west again by Aurora. The first Europeans to visit Peoria were French explorers Jean Nicolet and Pierre Poitou in 1695. The next year English traders Lawrence Bennett and Edward Winslow explored this area. In 1763 Peoria was chartered as a town by George Rogers Clark. It became an agricultural center with many small factories until it declared independence from Great Britain in 1818. In 1821 Peoria became a state capital under territorial government when Illinois became a United States territory. From 1833 through 1847 it served as the seat of government for Cook County (the present-day Chicago metropolitan area). In 1853–54, following the outbreak of the American Civil War, Peoria seceded from Cook County and joined Confederate Illinois. The city lost all its federal funding during World War II; however, it has since rejoined that community as an official U.S.-designated city.[1] Peoria's economy has been largely based on agriculture since early days; today much of its employment takes place in manufacturing or services related fields such as transportation and health care/ social assistance

They are now on display at RAF Fairford in UK. - A C-47 Skytrain is one of three Boeing 747s that were donated by Boeing Aircraft Company in 1995 as part of a deal between then-President Bill Clinton and then-Air Force Chief General Don Armstrong. These airplanes are currently stored at NASA Greenbelt near Washington D.C.. They will be transferred to Wright Patterson AFB near Dayton OH in 2019 under a program led by Boeing Co.'s Aeronautics division.. East Peoria was founded in 1847 by the town founders. The city was named after General George Washington, who had fought in the American Revolution and later served as President of the United States. In 1907, East Peoria became a borough and then a city. In 1968, the city annexed parts of West Peoria and Grayslake.
