East Moline, Illinois is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,031 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first known inhabitants of what is now East Moline were the Potawatomi and other Native American groups who lived near the present-day city of Chicago. In 1817, General James K. Polk founded the village of Racine in Kane County, Illinois on land owned by Washington Irving; this site would later become East Moline. The village's first store opened in 1820. The Village of East Moline was incorporated as a town on November 3, 1868 from parts of Racine and Lake View Heights townships. The name originated from an Indian word meaning "a place where maize (corn) can be grown." In 1904, work began to build Route 66 through centralDu Page County and east to Springfield; this road would eventually become known as Interstate 80. The townspeople built a small park on Main Street to serve as a stop for motorists traveling east on I-80; this park remains today and is called the “I-80 Park” after that route's designation). On January 24, 1922 – seven years after its incorporation – East Moline voted to secede from Du Page County and join the state of Illinois as a separate municipality named after Lucius Noyes—the last original settler in what would become East Moline. A year later (on February 2), Noyes himself became mayor when all other officials resigned due to allegations of graft involving their predecessor’s departmental hiring practices. At that time, only men could hold office within EastMoline; women did not vote until 1979.)
