Downers Grove, Illinois was founded in 1837 by farmers who migrated from North Carolina. The town grew rapidly during the early 19th century and soon became a center of trade and culture in the area. Downers Grove is known for its large number of churches and its rich history which includes both successes and failures. Downers Grove was originally called New Manchester because it was one of several towns founded by John Nicholson in 1792 as part of the Northwest Territory. In 1837, the town changed its name to Downers Grove after Lieutenant Colonel George Downing, who served as commander of the First Illinois Regiment at the Battle of Springfield on October 15, 1836. Downing's regiment helped suppress a slave rebellion that had taken place in nearby Danville two weeks earlier. In 1849, Downers Groove became home to one of the first schools in Illinois when settlers erected a log schoolhouse on what is now State Street. The school operated until 1862 when it moved to an attached barn on Center Street. In 1870, Home Rule League founder Elijah Hicks donated land to build a new courthouse which was completed in 1871. The courthouse played an important role in Downers Groove's growth as a cultural center and later served as the seat for many local governments including City Councils, School Districts and County Courts before being replaced by present-day downtown Downers Grove in 1984. Downers Groove also experienced some success during its early years with businesses such as Wernham Hogg & Sons Shoes (established1868), Goudreau Bros., foundry (1872), Jellico Fine Glass (1876), Pritchard Lumber Co.(1878), Fiske Bros.(1880) and Buckeye Coal Mines(1901). However, these businesses eventually failed and most saw their closure within five years of their establishment. By 1903, only Wernham Hogg & Sons continued operating into the 21st century. The decline of agriculture throughout much of Illinois during this time led to increased competition for jobs among agricultural workers statewide which caused many small family-owned businesses to fail within five years of opening their doors; however, many larger companies such as those mentioned above did not suffer similar fate due to continuing economic prosperity shortly thereafter across much OF Illinois while smaller mom-and-pop operations thrived through expansions into other markets or remain open today despite difficult competition from larger outfits
