Downers Grove, Illinois is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located on the north side of Chicago. Downers Grove was first settled in 1836 by people from New England and Maryland. The Village of Downers Grove was created in 1839 when two separate townships were merged to form one township. The town of Downers Grove was named for General Daniel Bogan (1774-1848), who fought with distinction during the Mexican–American War and served as Commandant of Fort Dearborn. On February 12, 1872, a group of men from nearby Lake View formed a wagon train to travel down the Mississippi River to what they thought would be an new land that lay beyond their original farmsteads in Cook County. When they reached Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin they discovered that their destination was already an established community called Chicago – located just east of downtown – and not some new frontier land they had been hoping for. In 1886, however, when enlarged by annexing neighbouring villages (including Grayslake), Downers Grove became one of the most populous communities in Illinois due to its location on Lake Michigan Boulevard between Cicero Avenue and Milwaukee Avenue. In 1898 it annexed another adjacent village (Stuart) which gave it a total population size of 1,711 residents; this number only increased over time as more villages were annexed into the Village until it reached 3,179 residents by 2002! Today’s population stands at 383 souls! During World War II various factories were built within or near Downers Grove such as CTA’s Menard Electric Arsenal #1 & #2 which produced radios and other electronics products for American military use during WWII; these factories remain active today providing jobs for many locals today while also contributing significantly to production values across all types/gadgets Produced therefrom! Additionally numerous homespun businesses sprang up including: The Armoury Shop (a grocery store), Mrs Fenton’s Nursery & Toy Store (a nursery/daycare), Mr Kapp’s Barber Shop (& Grocery store) & Third Street Secondhand Store(a secondhand bookstore). These establishments helped contribute greatly towards economic development within our village throughout those years; something we continue to enjoy even today!
On July 3, 1847, the first post office in Downers Grove was established. In 1868, the first store opened in Downers Grove. The village was incorporated on February 14, 1920. In 1934, the Village Board authorized a water works system to provide water for residents and businesses. On October 1, 1941, the village became an official town of Downers Grove.
