The community’s present-day airport was one of two primary sites chosen for U.S. Air Forces training operations at Elmhurst Airport (now O’Hare International Airport) in order to improve aircraft availability in times of war or emergency. Many people in Downers Grove first became familiar with the USAF through Operation Santa Claus which took place every year from 1990-1994 at Elmhurst AFB during Christmas seasontime. This event involved U2 pilots taking photos insidemas trees throughout downtown Downers Grove while children collected candy canes from various locations around town. In recent years,Operation Santa Claus has been replaced by a festival called “Pumpkin Fest†which is held annually on October 25th outside of Village Hall located at 6th Street and Elmhurst Drive- opposite KFC

This helicopter is being donated by the United Kingdom and it will be used for combat operations in Afghanistan. The helicopters are being delivered to the Afghan Air Force and they will be used for medical purposes, as well as reconnaissance and support missions.

Downers Grove, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Cook County. The population was 771,405 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous suburbs of Chicago. Downers Grove is home to Northwestern University and two large shopping malls - Sears and Kmart - as well as an array of public schools, hospitals, businesses and churches. The name "Downers Grove" comes from English settlers who found a small community on their farmstead in 1815. The original Village had nine buildings: a meeting house, schoolhouse, post office, storehouses, barns (now used as apartments), garage and several acres of land reserved for agricultural purposes. In 1831 the first church was built; it was called First Baptist Church until 1876 when it changed its name to United Methodist Church because that congregation wanted to distance themselves from what they saw as religious hypocrisy among other denominations in Chicago. The growth of Downers Grove began with its incorporation as a town in 1872; at that time there were only three homes in Downers Grove! The town became one municipality with a population of over 100 residents before merging with Cook County on January 1st, 1933 to form the largest county in Illinois by area (at 102 square miles). In 1949-1950 construction began on what would become Northwestern University's now iconic Addison Campus including four football fields which served as part of Field House Stadium until 1964 when Northwestern moved into Memorial Stadium which houses all academic departments today! In 1957-1958 renovation completed on Armour Avenue gave Downs Grove's first grocery store - Raley's - location within walking distance for many people living within the then rapidly growing township! On October 25th 1960 Ground Zero for Operation Neptune's Spear resulting in more than 3000 deaths resulted when two bombs detonated simultaneously inside Park Plaza Shopping Center killing 5 people & wounding 43 others!!! One year later another bomb exploded outside City Hall injuring 3 people!!! This event forever impacted downtown Chicago!! In 1966-1967 construction began on Ryan Airport adding 2 new runways making it OPUS airport #3 serving Chicagoland since 1967!!!! Today Flynt hangar provides much needed aviation storagefacility adjacent toRyanAirport & also creates bedroom communities facing east across MidtownChicago !! Over $100 million has been invested into this facility creating jobs throughout northeast suburbanChicago!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Downers Grove is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,844 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Downers Grove is one of the most affluent cities in Illinois. Downers Grove was founded by abolitionists on land that later became part of Aurora Township. They named their new community "Downtown" after downtown Chicago where they hoped to create a center for education and political activism against slavery and racism. The first post office in Downers Grove was established in 1852 and remained open until it closed in 1902 due to low mail volume. The first store opened at 5th and State Streets on November 1, 1853. In 1865, the village was incorporated as a city with its own mayor and council members but this status ended when the city merged with Chicago in 1898. In 1932, Congress passed legislation giving all U.S. municipalities within 10 miles ofChicago voting rights in electing their municipal officers including those located inside of Chicago's Midway Airport (then known as Midway Field). This gave Downers Grove Municipal president James Fenton an opportunity to run for office against incumbent Mayor John Pappas who had been appointed by then-Mayor Richard Jealous without having any say in the matter. Fenton won handily and continued to serve until his retirement in 1957 when he was succeeded by his son Barry Fenton Jr.. After Barry Fenton Jr.'s death, his widow Barbara took over presidency until her death in 1993; thereafter, the position has been held continuously by her daughter Lori Hessler-Fenton since then. In 2006, both Lori Hessler-Fenton and Barack Obama were born within two blocks of each other during their childhood years which made them social media icons for Downers Grove residents; however no formal relationship has ever formed between them though they are considered friends or family members to many people living there.
