Dolton was founded in 1836 byodus and his wife Sarah Cook. It was named for General David Dolton who fought in the Mexican-American War as a captain under General Stephen Johnson. General David Dolton also donated land to form what is now the Great Western Cemetery and this area contains some of the earliest stone markers in Illinois. The first post office was established in 1837, and the first store opened on July 6th of that year. In 1839, a school was built and it operated until 1915 when it became an all-boys high school. In 1851, John Wurtzel started a tannery which still stands today as one of the most important businesses in town. In 1865, Nathaniel Hildebrandt started a grocery store which continues to operate today as one of the most prominent stores in town In 1907, Mrs. Addison Pugh started an ice cream parlor just east of where she currently resides on Main Street that quickly became popular with locals and visitors alike . Over time Mrs . Pugh has continued to serve up her trademark treats from her ice cream parlor including chocolate milk shakes (now illegal) and peppermint mochas served hot with whipped cream (now legal). She also operates her own farm out back where she grows corn, soybeans, hay and other vegetables
