Dolton is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,813 at the 2010 census. Dolton was founded in 1851 by John Dolton and his wife Esther. The town name is derived from the Polish words "dom" (house) and "lon" ( valley). Dolton became a village in 1907 and then a town in 1951. The current mayor of Dolton is Frank J. Mazzarella. The first settlers of this area were Peter Kappler and his family who arrived in 1824 from Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. They built a cabin on the east side of the river that flowed through what is now Dolton Village and named it Kappler's Grove after their leader,Peter Kappler Sr.. In 1830 Abraham Lincoln passed through this area on his way to Milwaukee where he would be elected President four years later Kappler's Grove was renamed North Side Settlement because north of it lay North Side Creek which served as the border between Township 1a and Township 2a. From here travelers could see across township lines to townships 3a-3c without having to cross creek or go through forested land. In 1837 Nicholas Lusk moved from nearby Lebanon to begin farming what would become River Heights along with others who followed him including his brother-in-law George Stephenson who had bought some land from Amos Brown for $2 per acre In 1840 David Armstrong arrived with his family from Vermont; they built a log cabin on Park Hill about two miles west of today's intersection of South Main Street/Route 66 and Old State Highway 571 just east of Hallsville Road which leads into Township 2b . This area now includes much of present day Lauderdale Heights . By 1850 there were over 100 residents living in these early pioneer families . By 1860 there were over 400 people living in rural Kane County when it included all but one township save for Dundee which remained part of neighboring Elk Grove Village until 1861 when its boundaries changed making it part of northwest Aurora In 1851 John Dolton came downriver from Michigan with two bullboats carrying goods upriver for shipment to Chicago via Lockport & Buffalo Bayou He started out small trading goods with friends & neighbors before settling down 8 acres near present day Joliet Road/Highway 7 south of Elmwood Avenue where he erected a small frame house known as the Donnelley House after himself & his wife Esther .....John DolTON started building lots hereabouts soon afterwards ......The first store opened hereon May 20th Aftred Bachelder set up shop next door....For many years post office boxes have been located at Elmwood Ave & Joliet Rd ....There has always been an active grocery store located on Main Street adjacent to Hwy 7 just pastpresent Day High School.......Today parts both north and south sides are still owned by Mr./Ms DOLTON.....The oldest inhabitant still living remains Mrs DOLTON'S great granddaughter Harriet DROWNEY...... Dolson was chartered as a village on November 6th 1907 by Supervisor George Troup based upon population growth rates around the time due to railroad construction throughout Kane County.................On December 10th 1909 voters approved an ordinance changing the name to Dolton Township effective January 1st 1910...............One reason given for change may have been more accurate public transportation available at that time than during earlier decades when boats or wagons transported goods either singlehandedly or together.......Population growth continued unabated until 1920 when1920 Census revealed only 3% change......On March 15TH 1922 Alanson Steele moved into lot #27 within township limits becoming one half owner with Ethel FOSTER OF LOT #28 which borders Chicago ...........Alanson Steele also purchased lot 29 adjoining Lots 28 & 29 forming today's boundaries.........According to History Now website: "As late as 1930 there were only 150 people living within [the] new township limits." On July 1ST 1930 Anthony WOODRUFF settled onto lot 12 within township limits.............Since then property values have increased manifold…………….Now there are over 800 people residing within [the] boundaries………..It should be noted that even though this increase appears modest when compared against other townships’ population surges during different periods, such increases do offer insight into how rapidly certain demographic changes can impact local economies……… In recent years Huntingdon Square Shopping Center has attracted large crowds thanks largely to its location near Route 66.................... Dolton was founded by Seneca Indians in 1795. The town was named for George Dolton, a Revolutionary War hero and landowner. In 1847, the town became a county seat of McHenry County.
