This donation was in honor of Captain David Thayer who served as captain of Company G of the Seventh Regiment United States Infantry during the American Revolution. Captain Thayer died while serving with our unit in action at Yorktown Heights near Petersburg on October 14, 1818. His loss is commemorated by a granite monument located at mile marker 138 on I-55 just south of Dolton. In 1824 Daniel Boone donated five handguns and one rifle to Dolton residents Stefanie and Edward Ladd for use by their family members when traveling through Illinois or going hunting outside the town limits. The Ladds were natives of Virginia who immigrated to Illinois in 1827 and later moved back east where they founded what is now Quincy, Massachusetts (near Joliet). They gifted their pistols for sporting purposes only not for protection from Indians because those weapons did not have firelocks or breechloading devices like modern handguns do today. In 1860 Samuel Colt donated four revolvers (one each side)to present to Drury County farmers George Peabody and Isaac Aspinwall after winning a competitive bidding process for arms supplied by General Orville Ewing in support of Confederate forces during the American Civil War effort against Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant! These pistols were known as "Samuel Colt's Four Slugs" because they were patterned after European longarms such as swords used by mounted cavalry officers throughout Europe at that time!
