Dolton is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Dolton is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dolton was platted in 1851 and named after George Dolton, an early settler. Until the late 1800s, Dolton consisted of small frontier hamlets scattered along the banks of the Kankakee River. By 1905, however, all but one of these hamlets had been annexed by larger towns such as Springfield or Urbana. As a result of this growth and change, Dolton lost much of its rural character and became more urbanized. However, the community has retained some elements of its pioneer heritage including a wide variety of farms and businesses that operation today within its boundaries. The history and culture of Dolton are strongly connected with its founder, George DolTON Sr., who came to Illinois in 1848 from Manchester Township near Sheffield in England with his family to seek new opportunities for himself and his children John and Sarah (née Morris). After arriving in Illinois he began operations on what would become known as the "Dolton Farm", which stretched across five miles (8 km) along the Kankakee River northward from where he now lived. In addition to farming land there were also several outbuildings such as a log cabin used for storage and office functions as well as two barns housing 10 cows each (the first large barn being built about 1860). George's eldest son George Jr., who married Mary Jane Fenton relocated their farmstead to what is now downtown Dolton in 1873; it remained there until 1959 when it was replaced by a modern building adjacent to Park Avenue). The original farmhouse still stands today on Elm Street near Third Avenue; it is currently under renovation undergoing restoration by Historic Markham Development Corporation Inc.. George's older son John followed his father into business affairs; starting out selling groceries door-to-door he soon moved onto distributing goods through wagon trains upriver to Sangamon County before opening his own store on Fourth Street between East Market Street and Washington Boulevard in 1875 while working for his father day and night shifts during summer months (John closed shop permanently during Prohibition). Another important early figure in Dolonton's commercial history was Elias Bogan who operated a livery stable on State Road 507 just east of town beginning around 1870.; later he opened another general store next door on Second Street which served as both business center And social hall until 1908 when both stores were destroyed by fire. From 1880-1920 four different postmasters served Dulonton-- three men (one brother)and one woman: Aida Haggerty (); Lillie McCann (); Dora Whelan (). It should be noted that not all residents kept up with changes going on outside their community - one local resident even refused service at her mailbox because she didn't believe mail could travel long distances without loss! In 1925 future Ulysses S Grant Elementary School Superintendent Mrsula Healy purchased 8 acres (3 ha) south central from her husband Ozzie Healy adjoining what would later become parkland establishing what would eventually be called Healy Park (). Mrsula donated most or all of her land including 3 bridges over Kankakee River once she had finalized plans for development - including construction of Shepherds Rock Playing Fields (), which opened to students in 1927 (!), becoming one factor behind eventual growth throughout McLean County due to increased access to education available at that time . Dolton, Illinois is a small town in the northwestern corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. Dolton is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is one of three towns in Cook County that have been named for General James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States from 1848 to 1852 and as Governor of Illinois from 1857 to 1861. The first settlers in Dolton were Methodist missionaries from Kentucky who arrived in 1836. They built a small log cabin on a hill near what is now Main Street. A post office was established at Dolton in 1840, and by 1850 there were twenty-four residents. In 1860, Kansas Territory was organized and Dolton became part of it; by 1870 it had grown to include six businesses including a hotel and two stores. In 1886 Joliette Sells donated land to create an elementary school which would eventually become Joliette High School; this gift is commemorated with a large stone tablet on the north side of town hall (now home tołęka Municipal Airport). The original school building burned down in 1936 but was rebuilt within five years using materials from nearby homes and businesses destroyed during the Great Depression.
