This destroyed many homes and crops, so many people fled to Dolton in order to rebuild. The following year, 1837, a group of settlers from Indiana arrived in Dolton and began grazing their cattle on some of the land that had been burned down by Wayne's army. By 1840, there were over 100 residents living in Dolton. The settlement grew slowly until it reached its peak during World War II when it became one of the most heavily bombed towns in America with over 50 bombings occurring between 1940-1945 alone! Today, Dolton has a population of around 5,700 people who are mainly involved with agriculture or other businesses within commuting distance for work or pleasure. It remains an important community for education as well; Dolton Elementary School is one of only two public schools in Cook County (the other being John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum). Additionally, there are several churches which provide religious services to residents as well as local businesses and organizations throughout the day/weekend hours without having to leave their homes!
