The Dolton Air Force Base was established in 1942 as the first military airfield in Illinois. It served as a training ground for the United StatesAAF during World War II. The base was renamed Duluth Army Air Field in 1944 and it became an operational airbase during the war. The base was closed in 1946 and it was sold to the government of Minnesota in 1948. It served as a USAF airbase until it was transferred to NATO in 1949 and then to the United States Department of Defense in 1955. The DoD operated Duluth Army Air Field until its closure in 1984. Since its closure, there have been several proposals for the reopening of Duluth Army Air Field. However, no successful proposals have been made since 1984. In recent years, there has been renewed interest among local officials and developers who believe that Duluth AFB could be used as an open-air research facility for atmospheric sciences or even use as a tourist attraction with accompanying infrastructure development. There is currently no active plans to reopen Duluth AFB but this does not mean that there are not future opportunities for its reuse.

At that time, USAF Base Dolton became home to two squadrons: The 1st Bombardment Squadron (1BS) and 2nd Bombardment Squadron (2BS). These units would help shape America's strategic bombing capabilities during World War II and into the Cold War years. Since its inception at USAF Base Dolton, there have been many gifts given to our military members and their families here at this facility. Dolton is a small city located in Macomb County, Illinois. It was founded in 1857 by James Dolton and is the county seat of Macomb County. The population of Dolton was 9,587 at the 2010 census. Dolton is one of the original townships in Macomb County, and it became a city on July 1, 1907. The name "Dolton" comes from the Irish word "Doilín," meaning "a field where corn is grown." The town began as a group of landowning farmers who had migrated to this area from Illinois’s central region. By 1860, Dolton had a population of around 100 people and was functioning as an agricultural community. In 1871, new settlers arrived and quickly developed what would become the commercial center of the community. This period saw advances in transportation and communication that allowed for growth within the small town. In 1888, Dolton built its first courthouse; this building still stands today and serves as both local government headquarters and court house. During World War II, many businesses were closed due to wartime rationing; however, DolTON's economy boomed thanks to wartime contracts that brought new jobs into town. After the war ended, business slowed down somewhat but never truly disappeared; instead, many new businesses opened up throughout downtown Dul ton during this time period including two banks (First National Bank & Trust Company and PeoplesBank), several restaurants/cafes/bars/, two grocery stores/, two printing shops/, three carpenters'/ woodworkers'/and four metal recyclers/. In recent years there has been noticeable growth within downtown Dul ton with multiple residential developments being constructed along 5th Street South between Quincy Avenue North (the main thoroughfare) and Spring Street South since 2007-2009; these developments have seen heavy traffic congestion which impacts negatively on business operations due to increased demand for parking spaces; nonetheless residents continue to fill all available parking spots while customers are shuttle bused directly to their destinations without having to wait long periods of time for buses
