The Dixon National Guard was first organized on November 10, 1871. The original members of the Dixon National Guard were thirteen men who volunteered to serve in the 1st Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. On January 1, 1872, the Dixon National Guard was formally constituted by act of Congress and placed under the command of United States Army General John P. Morgan. The Dixon National Guard has served in many wars including World War I (1914-18), World War II (1941-45), and the Iraq War (2003). In addition to their fighting duties, the Dixon National Guardsmen have also been called upon to provide additional security for local events and businesses. The current membership of the Dixon National Guard is over 4200 men and women who are dedicated to serving our country with honor.

The Dixon National Guard was organized on November 15, 1848. The first unit was organized as the 12th Illinois Infantry Regiment. The regiment served in the Mexican-American War and in Reconstruction. In 1903, the 1st Regiment of Cavalry became a part of the Dixon National Guard. On January 1, 1907, the 1st Regiment of Cavalry was redesignated as the 10th Cavalry Regiment and became a part of the Dixon National Guard.
Dixon is a small town in the heart of Illinois. The population was 8,471 at the 2000 census and 9,021 as of the 2010 census. Dixon is located on the edge of the Sangamon County seat of Bloomington, about 20 miles west of Chicago. It is one of three towns in Sangamon County that are home to both the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and Purdue University. Dixon also has a large manufacturing base including four major auto dealerships and two fabricators. According to the 2010 census, Dixon has a total area of , all land. The first settler in Dixon was Nicholas Dixon who arrived from England in 1824. He founded what became known as "Dixon's Prairie" around what is now UIUC. In 1829 he married Mary Ann Hagerty and together they started farming 25 acres near present day UIUC campus where they raised chickens, cows, pigs, horses and other livestock until their death in 1865. Their son John Hagerty took over the farm when his father died in 1878. Today John's descendants own more than 100 acres within walking distance of UIUC campus - some have even set up permanent homes there! After World War II many people left Dixon for better opportunities elsewhere in Illinois or nationwide; however, many decided to come back after democracy was restored here following World War II with fresh eyes and open hearts willing to start again from scratch - like Nick Dixon had done 50 years earlier! After coming back many families brought their old farms back into production such as raising eggs for local grocery stores or producing cheese for local markets (still done today). Many residents also started businesses such as drywall installation services or pet stores while others continued farming/processing vegetables or fruits from their yards into marketable items like fruit cups or baskets to sell at local foodstores statewide! A few notable examples include: The original UIUC students who founded "The Student Union" which still exists today as one of UIUC's most popular student organizations; current Mayor Rick Majerus who came back after living away during college hiatus; current Superintendent Cheryl Boone Isaacs; current First Lady Andrea Boleyn; former Congressman Dick Durbin...the list goes on! Today much has changed since Nick Dixon's time 50 years ago but many things that made him so proud remain important here including: A community whose assets make it an attractive place to raise children whether they attend school here full time or not; strong relationships between locals and visitors alike due largely to cultural exchange programs conducted by various university groups each semester throughout town square called Village Square where everyone gathers for breakfast/lecture/variety events every Sunday morning before going off to do their own thing (and sometimes buy groceries); entrepreneurship being rampant thanks simply to sheer demand from tourists seeking out authentic downtown architecture similar to what you would see only minutes away on State Street anywhere else outside Chicago?
The National Guard has a rich history that goes back centuries. The first national guard units were raised in 1775 to protect the new nation during its early days. However, the Guard wasn't always a reliable force. In fact, some of the earliest incidents involving the Guard occurred during the Revolutionary War when patriots attacked loyalist soldiers and guards. After Confederation, the Militia Act of 1815 set up an organization called the New York National Guardsmen under martial law to help maintain order in New York City. The act also created specific duties and responsibilities for each regiment of guard. This gave rise to what is now known as " regimentation ". In 1842, Congress passed the Militia Act of 1861 which authorized separate regiments of United States regulars to be raised for service in Mexican America. As this was happening, existent militia forces were diverted into state militias or disbanded altogether due to lack of funds or manpower (although some regiments did serve). This change in policy led to tension and disorder among volunteer units across western states caused by partisan politics (a conflict between citizens who supported their respective governments and those who didn't). Following secession from the United States on April 12th, 1861, manyunits within state militias became part of Confederate armies; these units continued into 1865 when Union troops overran South Carolina and Georgia leading to another round of unit disbandments because there was no longer any money available for armaments. This left a vacuum in military leadership that was filled by men like Winfield Scott Hancock who had served with distinction in both Union and Confederate forces .
