Des Plaines, Illinois was settled in 1845 by a group of families from the town of Westfield, Massachusetts. The community was named for Captain John Des Plaines and his family who had come to the area as part of a Mormon Battalion during the Mexican-American War. In 1860, Des Plaines became one of 12 townships that made up Cook County, Illinois. It didn't join Chicago until 1871 when it became an official city.
