The name "Des Plaines" comes from the French word "plain" meaning level or smooth; this is likely why it was chosen as the site of what would become Des Plaines Township in 1836. In 1871, when Prairie du Chien, Iowa became a state, Des Plaines became an incorporated village and again took its name from plain - this time for all of Cook County. The first settler in what would become Des Plaines Township was John Blythe who arrived there in 1836 with his family. Over time other families followed and by 1840 there were 10 people living in the township. By 1862 only 2 people remained living there and by 1870 only 7 people lived there due to farming/ ranching being the primary industry then. In 1871, when Prairie du Chien became a state, Des Plaines became an incorporated village under control of Cook County with its own mayor and board of trustees (similar to those today). That year saw some big changes for the town as it experienced rapid growth thanks to heavy immigration from Hungary and Czechoslovakia which had just come into being following World War I. Soon enough both villages had their own schools and churches which helped fuel growth even further! By 1920-21 Des Plaines had reached its peak with over 100 residents on a small square mile (1 km²) - making it one of America's largest towns at that point! But things changed rapidly after that as automobiles began becoming available which quickly led to more housing development around town while also reducing traffic congestion – making life much easier for everyone!
