Des Plaines, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362,563 as of the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Chicago and the largest city in Illinois without a metropolitan area. The Des Plaines community was founded by French Canadian immigrants who arrived in 1814. In 1847, the first post office was established there. The site of present-day Des Plaines had been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries before that. The first European settlers were French Canadians who arrived in 1814 at what is now known as Galena Street and North Michigan Avenue. They called their land "Montoire." Over time, other groups also migrated to this area: Irish Catholics from northwestern Ireland; Germans from Bavaria and Württemberg; Italians from Naples and Sicily; Poles from Lower Silesia; Serbian Orthodox Christians from Pomerania; Jews from Tarsus and Isreal; Scandinavian whites (Frisians) from Norway and Sweden; African slaves brought over on steamboats by traders Routt, Beecher and others during the 1830s onwards. These newcomers blended with local indigenous groups until nearly all European settlement had disappeared except for a small number of slaveholders who managed to hold onto their lands through various means including purchase or sale, gift or adoption into free households, or resistance to new arrivals - an experience which some historians term "the Great Migrations." Des Plaines is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,487 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Rockford, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Des Plaines" comes from the French word "des plaines" meaning "plain." The first settler in what is now Des Plaines was John Fisk who came to the area in 1809. In 1811, Captain James Kneeland and his party of soldiers founded Fort Dearborn on current-day Prairie Avenue in Des Plaines after discovering land that had been claimed by France. In 1812, General Anthony Wayne's army invaded Canada and burned Montreal before crossing the Great Lakes into Illinois. From this point forward, many settlers traveled to Illinois looking for new land to explore and purchase. One of these pioneers was George Stephenson who developed the Stephenson Road (now I-80) through what is now Des Plaine during those early days when travel between Chicago and Rockford was difficult and expensive. The first post office in what is now Des Plaines opened on February 14th, 1853 with three residents named Smith, Rankin and Wilson serving as clerks. By 1860 there were over 100 mail boxes located throughout the community including one on present day Northwest Side Drive which served as an important stop for farmers delivering their goods to market across Lake Michigan. In 1870 a school district was formed out of parts of Cook County that included Des Plaines Township along with Lombard Township and Woodridge Township; these districts would later become known as both Cook County School District No 1 (1934) and Parkland School District No 5 (2013). On October 3rd of that year Abraham Lincoln made history when he became thefirst U S President to address a crowd of citizens gathered at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Heights on February 6th 1861 making him an honorary graduate from that institution also sharing ground with future president Franklin D Roosevelt until Trump moved into office two years later! During World War II more than 20 factories were built within or near Des Plaine thanks to various wartime contracts managed by local companies such as American Can Company which manufactured ammunition for troops fighting overseas; these factories helped contribute significantly to economic development within the community over ensuing decades while also creating some very good jobs for locals during peacetime too!
