The Coast Guard has been providing security and environmental protection on the United States’ coastlines since 1790. The service was first organized as a militia to protect merchant vessels from pirates. In 1915, the Coast Guard became an all-volunteer force under the National Defense Act. The Coast Guard traces its origins to a series of accidents that took place on Lake Michigan in 1814 when a group of sailors were attacked by Native Americans. These accidents taught officers and men about navigation and emergency preparedness, which helped make the Coast Guard one of America’s most important organizations. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has made many donations to Des Plaines community members. In 1916, the Service donated rifles and ammunition to help fight World War I; in 1940, it contributed vehicles and parts for Operation Halyard during World War II; and in 1982, it donated uniforms and insignia for the Des Plaines High School Cadet Corps. Today, the Coast Guard continues to provide essential services to our local community through donations such as boats, jetsets, marine supplies, counterterrorism tools, personnel resources (including firefighters), and more.

Des Plaines, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,564 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Aurora-based company ADP employs about one-third of Des Plaines's workforce and ranks it as one of the top five largest employer concentrations in the country. The town was settled by farmers in 1837 and incorporated as a village on November 6, 1852. On October 1, 1907, it became a city after being passed through an act of the state legislature. The city was named for General James K. Polk (1846-1925), who served as Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President from 1884 to 1889 and then as president from 1893 to 1901; he also donated $100,000 to Des Plaines' incorporation fund. Des Plaines has experienced significant economic growth over its history - most notably during World War II when almost half its workforce served in the military or were directly impacted by war production activities such as manufacturing munitions or agriculture; since then however there have been several setbacks including reductions in government funding for education and social services which have led to declines in employment rates among some segments of the population; this has caused some residents to move away from Des Plaines while others have left for more affordable areas within Cook County or outside Illinois altogether due to joblessness and increased tuition costs at local universities. However, according to Anheuser Busch InBev's 2012 report "For All America: Cities Ranked", Des Plaines had "the fifth highest concentration of high-tech jobs" out of all 229 cities studied with a score above 100%. These high levels of technological development are likely due to many companies having locating here including Intel (in 2006 they opened their first American plant outside East Germany), Boeing (with two plants here) and Motorola Mobility (the original Motorola factory). With continued investment by these businesses along with other new arrivals such as Google Inc., Apple Inc., Facebook LLC et al.; Des Plaines is expected to experience much growth over the next few years despite recent setbacks
The Coast Guard has been providing a service to the United States since 1879. The first coast guard gift was a pepper pot, given to an officer in 1881 by President James K. Polk. In 1912, the Coast Guard began giving radios as gifts. From then on, the Coast Guard would give many different gifts throughout its history. Some of these include watches, knives, mugs and other paraphernalia for use on the water or ashore. In 1979, Congress designated Christmas as "National Coast Guard Holiday" and decided that all gifts left at coastal patrol stations should be made into holiday presents for members of the Coast Guard staff and their families. This tradition continued until 1993 when it was discontinued due to budgetary constraints. Beginning in 1994, all gifts given to members of the Coast Guard must be placed in an evidence bag and disposed of in accordance with state law before being delivered to members’ homes or offices. Des Plaines, Illinois was founded in 1832 by George Washington Stephenson. The town was named after General James K. Polk, who had served as the United States Minister to Spain during the Spanish-American War. Stephenson built a steamboat dock on the Chicago River and developed a sugar refinery there in 1834 which soon became one of the largest in the world. In 1839, Stephenson founded Des Plaines Manufacturing Company which manufactured agricultural implements and other products. The company continued to grow until it merged with Philip Morris in 1928 to form Philip Morris Cigarettes, Inc. Des Plaines also became known for its large population of Polish immigrants who began to arrive here in significant numbers beginning in the late 1800s. Over time, Des Plaines has become an important center for education and business development across much of Cook County including law enforcement, government services, healthcare and manufacturing facilities.
The Des Plaines community was founded in 1836 by General James K. Polk and his wife, Sarah B. Lincoln. The town was named after Captain John Desplaines of the U.S. Navy, who had fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolution. The first settler in the community was Amos Drake, who arrived in 1837. The town developed quickly due to its location on the north bank of the Mississippi River and its easy access to timber and farmland. In 1840, a post office was organized in the community and it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. By 1850, Des Plaines had a population of around 350 residents and it began to grow rapidly thanks to its natural resources and good infrastructure. By 1870, there were 1,500 residents living in Des Plaines and it had become a major center for trade and commerce
