The name "Des Plaines" comes from French for "plain." The first settlement in what would become Des Plaines was made in 1825 by General Andrew Johnson and his men during their military campaign against the Peoria Indians. In 1827, the nucleus of what became present-day Des Plaines was founded when Captain John G. Kapp bought two hundred acres (120 ha) of land along the then-unused south branch of the White River from George Lawless and others. Kapp named his new community after General James Kasky's successful expedition against Native American forces at Prairie du Chien in 1817. The village of Des Plaines began to form as a result of this early development and growth. Its citizens soon formed a select group that purchased property around what is now Armour Drive on the north side of town from William Greenough and others in 1853 for $1,500 cash plus an annual payment of $10 per year until it was sold to be used as open space within city limits (see Armour Drive Development). By 1860, more than fifty families had located here and built homes on either side of Armour Drive; by 1870–80 most had moved out but some continued to live there until 1924 when they were evicted because their house violated zoning regulations adopted by city planners to improve public health and aesthetics adjacent to Lake Michigan – one such regulation being that no houses could be located within 500 feet (150 m) of any body of water having an average depth greater than 15 feet (4 m).
