The Des Plaines, Illinois branch of the U.S. Army First Infantry Division (1ID) has been in service since 1868 and is one of the oldest infantry divisions in the army. The 1ID was mobilized for duty in World War I on April 6, 1917 and participated in the war as a unit until November 1918. The 1ID was then disbanded and its members were placed into other infantry divisions. In 1919, the 1ID was reactivated under further call-up and again served during World War II as a unit until September 1945 when it was disbanded once again. After World War II, the 1ID returned to active duty with a new name, 3rd Battalion (Americal), 10th Regiment (3RD AMERICAN). This unit originally originated from 2nd Battalion (U.S.) 7th Regiment (2ND ARABIC), which was also reactivated under this name in 1924; however, 2nd Battalion had already been disbanded by that time. 4th Battalion (U.S.) 9th Regiment also known as "the Blue Devils" served concurrently with 3rd Battalion from 1944-1945 before being disbanded along with 8th Battalion on December 15, 1945 due to budgetary restrictions associated with post-war demobilization policies of the United States government at that time. Since its reactivation in 1984 as part of Army Reserve Command's activation program for units activated for wartime service not meeting certain standards such as having an officer corps or establishment greater than 50 percent male*, 3rd Battalion*10th Regiment** currently serves as an inactive battalion located at Grand Prairie Barracks*, Illinois headquarters* garrisoned within Camp Logan*. This railroad created significant jobs and helped spur economic growth throughout the city over a period of several decades until it closed down in 1965 when Amtrak took over operation of passenger trains between Chicago and Northern Illinois towns along its route - including Des Plaines - making it unnecessary to build new tracks there. Desplaines has experienced rapid expansion since then: In 2000-2001, annexed parts of Lockport Township to form a new citygem; two years later another annexation followed – this time incorporating much larger portions of Lombard Township into the city limits. They named their new township after Gloucester County, British Columbia where they were from. The village of Des Plaines was founded by Andrew Jarratt on April 9, 1839 and became a part of Rock Island Township on March 4th of the same year. George Stephenson built the first railroad through Des Plaines on July 7th 1846 which connected the village with Rock Island Railroad Station east of town.
