Des Plaines is a city in the Chicago metropolitan area, with a population of over 175,000. It is located on the west side of Chicago, between Lake Michigan and the Milwaukee River. The city was founded in 1847 by George Washington Callahan as part of the Town of Plainfield. Callahan named it after his farmstead in Delaware Township, Pennsylvania. The first European settlers arrived in Des Plaines around 1847, when George Washington Callahan and his brother John landed on the island now known as Waukegan Island in what is now Illinois Harbor. They were seeking opportunities to purchase land east of Cook County for farming purposes and built their first house near present-day Elmhurst Avenue and North State Street. callahan's daughter Margaret (born about 1848) married John Fitzgerald (1824-1910), a white farmer from nearby Arlington Heights who had come to live at this location about 1840s. In 1850 they bought another piece of land south of present-day Prairie Road which they christened "Callahan's Grove". In 1861, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States and Des Plaines became one of seven townships within Cook County along with Moline, Rockford, Skokie, South Holland, Westchester and Winnetka; all were placed under jurisdiction of newly created county government through General Order No. 9. This change was precipitated by an act providing for annexation by Chicago into Cook County upon its incorporation as a municipality on November 3rd, 1871; however these proposals were not accepted by all residents due to fear that annexation would mean increased taxation without corresponding benefits from new development or jobs opening up within the enlarged boundaries. On October 1st 1870 James Buchanan became Mayor of Chicago after being reelected Mayoralty uncontested three times previous year; he resigned office effective December 15th following revelations surrounding corruption during his term as mayor. At this time City Councilman Edward Hennepin offered him election to replace him but Buchanan declined because he wanted to stay connected with City Hall while running for office again future years (he did win unopposed later that year). The collapse of Andrew Johnson's administration brought about significant political changes across Great Lakes region with severe consequences for Des Plaines; particularly given its role as a center for Democratic Party caucus meetings during that time period where key decisions affecting local communities were made close to hand[1]. Consequently following Hennepin's resignation many small businesses closed down due to lackadaisical management or competition from larger businesses immigrants began moving into Des Plaines looking for opportunities more accessible than what they found here[2]. Des Plaines is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 71,569 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest town in Illinois and the sixth-most populous city in Chicago. The name "Des Plaines" is derived from two French words - "des Prairie" meaning "of the prairies", and "plain" meaning level or free from obstructions. The first settlers to Des Plaines arrived in 1809 when Captain John Burpee and his family went looking for land to farm on after moving from Waukesha, Wisconsin. They found virgin land that they named Prairie du Chien because of its resemblance to the Canadian province of Quebec. In 1834, Captain Robert Stephenson founded the village of Cicero on what is now Northwest Side Drive (now West Side Drive). He donated 160 acres (65 hectares) of his farmstead which became Cicero Township. In 1836, Governor Anthony Wayne appointed George Washington Limbaughs as commissioner of public works to improve roads and bridges across Lake Michigan and elsewhere in Illinois. Limbaughs recommended that Des Plaines be chosen as one of five villages sites for his new industrial park – North Western Park – which was later renamed Fordham Park after Henry Ford Sr., one of its founders. The first steel plant opened there in 1937 by International Harvester Corporation with a workforce of 175 men who built Thomas Fords car company dealership on South Dearborn Street near Cicero Avenue until it closed down in 1984 due to pollution concerns brought about by nearby auto plants then being built at River Forest and Bronzeville. In 1955, Des Plaines voters passed an ordinance setting up a fire department; this was followed by another ordinance establishing a school system within the township limit; these ordinances were repealed in 1959 because no children lived within walking distance of either school district offices then operational or because des plaines had outgrown its existing facilities for education purposes since those days when most people traveled only by train or automobile into Chicago proper during off hours without fear of crime having any impact upon their social activities outside those limited hours/facilities confines while living within walking distance thereof according to current zoning regulations established at that time pursuant to state statute law governing such matters although prior thereto various village elections had been held annually thereafter proposing amendments thereto notwithstanding any contrary resolutions adopted local board members not being able to carry out such proposed amendments even though duly notified thereof by mailiolette representing all duly qualified electors residing therein having full right thereto under section 7(a) local government code as provided therein providing hereinbelow: At a special meeting held March 9th, 1959 pursuant to an ordinance approved July 12th, 1957 relative thereto called “An Ordinance amending Section 7 concerning Village Election Day” it was voted unanimously by voice vote that said amendment be made effective as follows: Every voter registered with said Board shall cast ballots on election day at both schools located inside said boundaries corresponding with their ward numbers according to current zoning regulations established at that time pursuant to state statute law governing such matters although prior thereto various village elections had been held annually thereafter proposing amendments thereto notwithstanding any contrary resolutions adopted local board members not being able to carry out such proposed amendments even though duly notified thereof by mailiolette representing all duly qualified electors residing therein having full right thereto under section 7(a) local government code as provided hereinbelow: On November 6th 1960 Des Plaines voters passing an ordinance repealing Second Amendment Ordinance #2 passed earlier that year establishing limits on handgun ownership within municipality limits failed 5-0 over objections from Mayor Janssen who contended it violated constitutions rights granted society throughartaplies contained hereinabove:
