Dekalb is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,027 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dekalb was founded by DeKalb Township trustees on November 10, 1868 as a station on the Chicago and Northwestern Railway (C&NW). The first post office was opened in 1870. Dekalb became a city on January 1, 1964 when it merged with neighboring municipalities of Park Ridge and Palatine to form the City of Naperville. In 2000, Dekalb annexed the remaining portion of Palatine Township and its population increased to 11,898 residents. On December 15, 2007, Dekalb passed an ordinance that established a park system within its borders which currently includes 16 different parks totaling . Dekalb has been home to many businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), Johnson Controls Inc., Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), American Management Corp., and others over the years. One of the most notable individuals who lived or worked in Dekalb during its early years was Alexander Graham Bell; he served as manager for telephone service in town from 1876-78 before moving to Indianapolis full-time. He also built two homes here – one still standing today – both were completed in 1881.
