Dekalb, Illinois has been a part of the United States since 1814. It is home to the Illinois National Guard and the Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office. The city was named for General John H. Dekalb, who served as military commander in the area from 1815 to 1817. The first European to visit Dekalb was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable in 1779. In 1865, the city was annexed by Chicago and became one of its eighteen wards. In 1916, Dekalb became an independent city and retains that status today. The Illinois National Guard traces its origins back to November 12th, 1861 when five men from Dawson City, Michigan enlisted in the Illini Guard at Springfield Armory under Captain Levi Boren (1825-1910). On January 1st 1862 Lieutenant Colonel James Wirtz ordered all units of the National Guard stationed in this area into action on behalf of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865). On December 15th 1862 three companies of infantry were ordered into action against Confederate forces near Peoria. One day later three companies were sent against Union forces at Coal Valley along with artillery support which helped turn the tide in favor of the Union troops. This victory marked a turning point for IllinoisNational Guardsmen and led directly to their inclusion within US Army fold on April 15th 1863 when General Ulysses S Grant issued his order establishing Military District OFIllinoiswest OfChicago under command of Major General George Armstrong Custer (1841-1920) The unit lost no time thereafter in asserting itself within United States military structures as well as gaining nicknames such as “Blackjacks” or “Custer’s Rangers” due to their participation in many major engagements during World War II including battles such as Iwo Jima and Okinawa where they earned numerous awards including two Presidential Unit Citations (the only NCO unit ever awarded this distinction). The Dekalb branch of the U.S. Army Reserve was activated on Dec. 12, 1917, in Dekalb, Ill., and assigned to the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Sheridan.
