Dekalb, Illinois is a city of over 100,000 people located in south central Illinois. It is the county seat for DeKalb County and has a population of about 120,000. The city was founded by John Decatur in 1837 as a result of the westward migration of the Illinois General Assembly. In 1841, Dekalb became part of the United States and it became an agricultural center with production of hay and Abbott's beans. The first coffeehouses were established in Dekalb in the early 1800s. There are now more than 20 coffeehouses throughout Dekalb and neighboring towns. Coffee has been an important part of the town’s economy since before it was even incorporated as a city. The first coffee plantation in Dekalb was built on land that had been donated by Major James Harker to help support his family during their time as refugees following slavery in Georgia. After emancipation, many white men moved to Dekalb looking for new opportunities and began operating plantations along the Kankakee River valley where they raised crops such as cotton, rice, corn, potatoes and bacon (a type of pork). By 1850 there were 10 coffee plantations competing for market share around Dekalb with some output reaching 4 tons per day! Many local businesses also grew out of this industry including grocery stores/markets operated by merchants such as Wm Garity & Co., Jno Purdy & Sons (later renamed Evelyn’s), Geo Fenton’s Hardware Store (later Merton-Fenton), Mrs Auld’s Clothing Emporium (later Stonington) and others Coffee production peaked at around 1 ton/day in 1865 but then slowly declined due to environmental problems caused by pests such as lathyrus cinerea which attacked flowers used for processing beans However, after World War I events led to increased demand worldwide for coffee beans which resulted in improved technology yielding more consistent quality beans In 1919 Pioneer Coffee Company opened its first roastery near present day Union Station providing customers with fresh roasted coffee every morning Today Pioneer Coffee continues to play an important role within the community through its retail store operations as well as its online presence

Dekalb, Illinois is home to one of the earliest commercial coffee roasters in the United States. In 1875, J.H. Case and Company opened a small shop on State Street in Dekalb. The company became nationally known for its fine coffees and continued to operate until 1925. In 1957, Dekalb Coffee Associates was founded by three friends who had started buying and selling coffee from a small store on State Street. The company grew rapidly and began producing its own beans in 1971. By 1992, Dekalb Coffee had become one of the leading roasters in the United States.
Dekalb is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It lies near the edge of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus and was once a small farming community. The population was 914 as of the 2010 census.[1] The first Europeans to visit Dekalb were French traders in 1682 who named it after Jean-Baptiste de Dekalbi, Sieur de la Salle's personal secretary. In 1819, John Stephenson founded Stephenson, Inc., a holding company that included lumber mills in Decatur and Peoria. The first school in Dekalb was opened on White Street in 1828 by Rev. James Fenton[2]. A post office has been established at Dekalb since 1868. Dekalb began to grow rapidly during World War II when refugees from Europe came to the area to find work and housing. The population reached 1,600 by 1945. After the war, Dekalb started to decline as many people left for new opportunities or retired. However, it restarted its growth during the late 1990s with a influx of newcomers from Chicago and other nearby cities.[3] As of 2000, the population was 1098 residents,[4] making it one of Champaign-Urbana's most populous communities.[5][6]

The University of Chicago Medical School and Northwestern Memorial Hospital are located in Dekalb. Dekalb was founded on November 3, 1819 by General James Wilkinson as a town in what is now Cook County. Dekalb was named for General Andrew Dekalb who fought with distinction against the British in the War of 1812. In 1817, General Wilkinson donated land to be used for a school and hospital that would serve future generations. On November 3, 1819, Dekalb became a town under the name of "Dekalbi". The first school building was built on this site in 1824 and continues to serve as the town's primary educational institution to this day. In 1847–1848, DeKalbi voters passed an ordinance authorizing annexation by Chicago due to its growing population and importance as a transportation center for goods moving between Cook County and other municipalities within Chicago Township (now Racine). On October 8, 1850 – two years after incorporation – Zephyr Teachout became mayor of Dekalbi when he won election over incumbent John Cavanagh by 1 vote; however Mayor Teachout resigned effective October 15th due to health reasons unrelated to his mayoral term or any political affiliation with either party (he had served since December 1st). The first municipal election held in Chicago Township occurred on November 3rd $1 per capita vs $0 per capita - all citizens were allowed to vote regardless of race or sex at that time - which returned James Ahern as mayor with 62% of the total vote majoritying him over challenger John Jarrigan 26%. This event marked one year during which no African American person held elected office withinChicago Township- until 1918 when Mayor Harry Jaffe appointed Abram Levy from Evanston as first African American Municipal Deputy Director overseeing all aspects civic functions without having any say in policymaking or executing ordinances; however Levy vacated his position effective February 14th because he could not stomach living near McCormick Place- then located just south of downtown- where racial discrimination still persisted throughout most part of early 20th century America notwithstanding new laws prohibiting such practices
