The name Dekalb has been used since then for both the entire township and Dekalb City. The first store in Dekalb opened on Main Street in 1835. In 1844, John Hays donated land to build a school and post office there. In 1870, the Chicago and Northwestern Railway built a line through Dekalb and founded its depot here. The railroad played an important role in the early development of Dekalb as a community with shops, churches and businesses opening up around it. In 1912, DeKalb County was formed from parts of DuPage and Kane counties. On November 3 that year, Dekalb became one of five townships included within DeKalb County; it remained an unincorporated community until 1954 when it became a city under the same name
Dekalb was founded in 1812 by James Dekalb, a landowner and captain of a whaling ship. The town was named for Dekalb's farmstead on the river mouth of the Calumet River. In 1838, the town became a village when it annexed parts of neighboring Carbondale. In 1916, Dekalb was renamed by Illinois Governor George West Fuller to honor General Sherman's hometown of Decatur, Alabama.
