Dekalb, Illinois is a small town in the heart of theMidwestern United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Dekalb is known for its agriculture and manufacturing industries as well as its many cultural attractions such as the Dekalb History Museum and Arena, which are home to the Illini football team. The first Europeans to visit Dekalb were French missionaries in 1679 who built a trading post on Muskegon Heights overlooking what is now downtown Dekalb. The post served as a crossroads for traders from Michigan and Illinois. Native Americans also frequented the area, including the Potawatomi tribe who hunt deer, foxes, and other animals in nearby woods. In 1824, John Edwards founded Edwardsville (now DeKalb), Illinois on land that he had acquired fromthe Potawatomi Tribe. Edwardsville became one of America's early planned communities with streets laid out grid-fashion like those seen today. In 1827, James Kieft purchased 1/4 mile ofland southeast of present-day downtown Dekalb from John Edwards for $5 per acre. This tract would later become Kieft Parklands when it was annexed byDeKalb County in 1928 During much of the 19th century there was little development within Dekalb limits due to lack of transportation or an available workforce; however ranching began to take off in central Illinois during this time period and soon enough Dekalbsouthwest side began developing into what is now known as "the good old days". Dekalb is a city in Illinois, United States. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dekalb County and the second most populous city in Illinois after Chicago. The first Europeans to visit Dekalb were French Voyages up the Mississippi River in 1697-98, which included an exploration of what is now DeKalb County. Captain Jacques Marquette entered Dekalb on February 8, 1763 as part of his journey from Michigan to Quebec City with a party of men and horses. They discovered a large tract of land east of Lake Michigan called "the Prairie." In 1802, John Quincy Adams became President of the United States and appointed James K. Polk as Secretary of War; Atwater had recommended Polk for this position because he believed that he would be able to promote American energy interests in Europe through hisSecretaryship. In 1804, Polk ordered General Andrew Jackson to cross the Mississippi River into Missouri so that he could take possession of Native American lands west of Kansas City. This action caused great controversy because it violated treaties made between France and Spain about the sale or trade with these nations' Indian populations. In 1807–08, John Cranch was elected Sheriff of Cook County (now DeKalb County) by popular vote over incumbent David Levy; this event helped stimulate growth within DeKalb County due to increased public corruption throughout Cook County during this time period. On April 1, 1840, Dekalb's incorporation as a town came about when voters ratified an ordinance passed by the Illinois General Assembly creating Dekalb Township from parts of Richland Township (northwest corner), White Settlement Township (southwest corner), and Weldon Township (east corner). When America gained independence from Great Britain on December 12th, 1776, Dekalb became one of seven townships in what is now DuPage County that voted for George Washington as their first president; this event helped attract new settlers to central Illinois during its early years following Confederation. As more people moved into central Illinois during this time period, there began to be calls for reform within government along with increasing competition among township governments for limited resources such as tax revenues which led to cooperation between local government officials in order to share costs while maintaining some autonomy over their functions statewide
Dekalb was founded in 1836 by James Dekalb and his family. The town was named for the DeKalbs, a family of Revolutionary War veterans who had settled in the area. Dekalb was first called "New Albany" because it was the site of a new township organized by the General Assembly in 1815. In 1828, the name of the town changed to "Dekalb". It is believed that Dekalb's first store was opened in what is now the business district. In 1848, Dekalb became one of thirty-six townships in Illinois added to the state system. The town continued to grow rapidly, and by 1870 it had over 1,000 residents. In 1865, Dekalb became an independent city and remains so today.
