Smucker Companies is responsible for manufacturing and selling all of National Coffee Corporation's products worldwide. As one of the largest coffee companies in America, The Peet Coffee Company had a strong presence in Deerfield Township throughout its history. Deerfield, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,895 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Deerfield was founded in 1837 by John Deere and his family as a farming community on the edge of what is now Downers Grove Township. The first settlers were brothers George and David Deere, who arrived in 1837 from Holland. They started a farm on the east side of village square and named it "Deerfield". The first post office was established in 1838, and the first school was built in 1839. In 1840, John Deere donated land to form what is now Elmhurst Township. The Deersons raised crops there until they sold their farm in 1865 to Elias Howe for $10,000. Howe developed Deerfield into a large town with many businesses including four banks (the First National Bank of Deerfield (), Third National Bank of Deerfield (), Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company () and Trust Company of America ()) as well as several churches (Sts. Bernard's Church (); Christ Episcopal Church (); First Congregational Church ()); Oak Hills Cemetery ()); Masonic Lodge No., 5th degree (). After World War II when industry declined throughout much of Cook county but deer hunting increased due to growth in suburban areas around downtown Chicago, some people shifted away from beef production to pork production which continues today at nearby Decatur Park Zoo (). In 1924 local farmers formed an insurance company that became Farmers State Building & Loan Association (), which later became United American Life Insurance Co.; Incorporated; United Guaranty Corporation (); Elk Grove Village Company ; Allyn & Bacon LLP (). Another insurance company organized by local farmers called Farmers Exchange also grew rapidly during this time with branches located at various locations including main street corner stores (). Today most businesses are owned by larger organizations or have been privatized such as Sears Holdings which operates Sears Department Store on North Side across from University Of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus just down the street from old site where original store once stood
Deerfield was first settled in 1815. The town was named for John Deer, a Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Illinois General Assembly. In 1847, the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad reached Deerfield and began to allow passengers to travel between Chicago and Deerfield. The town grew rapidly with new businesses being established, including a millinery shop, a grocery store, a post office, and an ice cream parlor. By 1922, deer field had become one of the most populous towns in Illinois. However, during World War II the town's population dropped as many residents left for military service. Today deer field is home to a few businesses and is perhaps best known for its annual Deerfield Fair which features agricultural exhibits and carnivals throughout the year.
