The Coast Guard has been in Deerfield, Illinois for over a hundred years. The towns of Deerfield and Downers Grove have both been part of the service, and the Coast Guard Station has been in business since 1916. The first permanent coast guard station in Deerfield was built on the east side of DeKalb Street near State Street in 1916. The station served as a barracks for the Illinois National Guardsmen who patrolled the Great Lakes region at that time. In 1942, the state legislature passed a law authorizing the establishment of a coastal guard unit to protect shipping along Illinois’s coastline. The first Coast Guard officers were appointed and began their duties at this new station. The Station moved to its current location on Dearborn Avenue in 1978. It is one of only two stations within Illinois that still serve as an operational coastguard station. The other is located in Crystal Lake, Minnesota. At its current location, the Station provides security for vessels operating on or near our lakeshore communities and helps support homeland security activities including searches for smugglers and terrorists.
