The Deerfield Army National Guard's deployed gift history dates back to 1937. The unit's first deployment was to the Spanish-American War in 1898. The 1st Infantry Regiment, 15th Infantry Brigade was first mobilized in Deerfield on September 20, 1862. It served in the Union army during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. The regiment fought at battle of Antietam (September 17-21, 1862), Battle of Fredericksburg (December 12-15, 1862), and Battle of Chancellorsville (April 9-13, 1863). The regiment lost 2 officers and 23 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded during its service.

Over time, other medical facilities were added to the town – including a dispensary in 1885, an institute in 1902, and finally an operating room and intensive care unit in 1959. The growth of Deerfield continued into the 20th century; by 1920 it had reached 6,000 residents. However, during World War II (1939-1945), deer field came under heavy attack from American forces; many homes were destroyed or damaged as result of bombing raids. Today, however, deer field is still an important part of Deerfield’s history – both physically and culturally – with many buildings still standing dating back to those times!
Deerfield, Illinois was founded in 1809 by George and Anna Prentice. The town was originally called Deerfield, but the name was changed to its current form in 1827 because of the difficulties caused by the Great Chicago Fire.
