The Deerfield Air National Guard's (A-G) Deployment History is significant because it reflects the important role that the A-G has played in Illinois' defense since its inception as a state in 1818. With more than 42,000 members present at any time during peacetime or wartime, the A-G is one of the most diverse organizations in Illinois' military. This unique relationship began when General James K. Polk ordered Missouri's First Regiment of Artillery to occupy Burlington Heights near Springfield on october 6th of 1847 after Mexico recognized Illinois as a state. In response to this new development, Colonel John Dickey organized a unit from Captain Samuel Merrill's company of dragoons and raised it into a regiment under his command on november 10th of 1847 with orders to garrison Burlington Heights until such time as Polk could arrive with an army to take them down. The dragoons remained at Burlington Heights for six months while they were reorganized under Colonel Dickey before being ordered southward along with part of General Winfield Scott's army following Mexican independence proclamation on march 2nd of 1848. Aftermath of Mexican Independence Proclamation - On March 2d 1848, portions of General Winfield Scott's Army invaded California and occupied BakersFIELD whereupon Major General David Dixon ordered Lieutenant Colonel John J. Phelan commanding Company I Dragoons (DEERFIELD) to repel these invaders from our soil! These brave men defended their home town against overwhelming odds resulting in two officers fatalities & five missing including myself! Deerfield was founded in 1836 as a small farming community by General George Washington Carver and his wife Lucy. The town's first post office opened in 1840. A railroad station was built in 1846 and remains open today as the regional headquarters of Southern Illinois Railway Company (SIRT). Deerfield's prosperity derived from its location on Sangamon River between Peoria and Carbondale, its agricultural production, and its role as a manufacturing center for automobiles and other products during the early 20th century. The Sangamon River served as an important transportation artery for goods carried into and out of Deerfield from eastern Illinois until it was supplanted by Interstate Highway 95 in the 1960s. During that time, however, many businesses closed down or moved away because of changes in technology or competition from neighboring towns such as Carbondale or Moline. Some local businesses have since returned to existence but they remain tightly clustered around one main shopping area—the village square located near downtown—which has not changed much over the years despite repeated moves of residents and businesses inside and outside of it. Today there are several major employers within walking distance of each other: Dillard’s department store (just east of downtown), Kohl’s Department Store (southwest corner), YMCA (northwest corner), Sears Holdings Corporation (central plaza across from Cook County Courthouse) & Kmart Supercenter ( northwest corner). A number of smaller stores also operate within 1-2 miles including Wegmans FoodMart just southwest of downtown; Dollar Tree on Roosevelt Road northwest of city limits; ABC grocery store on Kane Road east side; Fruitlands Market Grocery Store just north sideuffs along Sangamon River; Bakewell Farms produce market south sideuffs along river bank adjacent to Dairy Queen restaurant; Prairie Home Cafe & Bistro west sideuffs adjacent to library
Deerfield was founded in 1836 by the Deacon family. The name derives from a deer that grazed on the property before it was acquired by the Deacons. The first minister of Deerfield was Rev. John H. Whitman and later, Rev. Solomon Swayne. In 1871, Reverend George Witherspoon became the first pastor of Deerfield United Methodist Church and served until his death in 1942.Revival services were held at several locations in nearby towns between 1870-1920 before being moved to Deerfield in 1920.
