In Decatur, Illinois, the first coffee beans were roasted in 1847. The city was founded by General James K. Polk and named for him after he won the Hickory War against Mexico. In 1861, John Stephenson opened a grocery store in Decatur and started selling coffee. By 1865, there were five small roasters in town and three large roasters. By 1870, the Decatur Coffee Company had been formed and began exporting coffee to Chicago.
Decatur is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois on the Kankakee River. The population was 25,903 at the 2010 census. It is home to the Decatur School District and is located within Cook County. The first European settlers in what is now Decatur were French traders who arrived in 1795 and named their land "La Prairie" after François-Marie Parent, Sieur de La Prairie, captain of the French frigate "Richelieu". In 1812, General James Speed's army destroyed Fort Dearborn near present day Decatur and surveyed this area as part of his plan for invading Russia. After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815, General Speed ordered all Indian tribes east of the Mississippi River to be removed from their lands by force or Treaty of Greenville in 1818. The last non-native residents were British subjects who arrived during Reconstruction following the end of slavery in America. In 1831, Decatur was chartered as a village by Samuel Todd (an early settler) with a population of twenty five people living on a square mile (0,848 km²). On July 1, 1830 an act was passed by Congress providing for township organization throughout Illinois; which allowed Todd to form a Township board with six members and an office for issuing licenses for merchants and farmers alike On October 12th 1830 David Hartsfield donated land northeast of town limits to become St Peters Township #2 with 3 lots @$10 per lot . The first postmaster was Matson Ladd who served until 1840 when Wm Noyes took over In 1840 John Cavanagh became postmaster In 1851 Paddy Fitzpatrick bought 2 Lots from Mr Swenzer & built a house thereon that still stands today known as “The Fitzpatrick House” . This house has been occupied by descendants of Paddy Fitzpatrick ever since

The first post office in Decatur was established on November 10, 1838. The first settler in what is now Decatur was Major John Pemberton who arrived with his family on July 17, 1836 from Canandaigua Township, New York. He built a cabin on the east side of town and named it Pemberton Station after himself and his wife Julia (née Livingston). A schoolhouse also operated here until 1850 when a new one was erected on the west side of town by subscription. In 1854, Isaac Knapp founded an agricultural society here which developed into what is now Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1870–71 when Illinois became a state, Decatur became its second city; it had been an unincorporated village since 1861 under the name of “Natchez” because Natchez Landing lay at its eastern boundary. On January 1, 1907–8 Morrill Act No 8 gave to each municipality within Cook County that voted in favor thereof two years' credit towards such purchases as gas lights and streetlights; this act led to the erection of electric lighting throughout the city by December 15th 1909
In 1913 Rufus Fenton organized what would become Chatanooga Industries Inc., one of several large textile companies promoted by President Woodrow Wilson during his "New Deal" presidency. At $100 million worth of sales in 1922 Chatanooga's share value had quadrupled since 1912 valued at over $1 billion today
A fire destroyed most of downtown Decatur on October 24th 1904 while all residents were inside their homes; only 3 people died as a result

Mayor Jens Christensen announced plans to move City Hall from downtown to a new facility designed by architect George Biddlewoodon just north of Commercial Street when those plans stalled after Christensen received powerful opposition from business interests
