Decatur is a city in central Illinois, United States. The population was 14,031 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marion County. The city was founded on December 1, 1836 by General David Dixon and named for decorous Colonel Nathaniel Lyon Decatur had been offered by the state but declined because he would have had to move from his home near Chicago to serve in the new town. On January 6, 1840 Dixon was again offered the township but accepted it because he felt that its location "would afford him an opportunity of seeing most of our fair State." The first courthouse in Decatur was built in 1851 and burned down in 1861; a new courthouse was built and opened in 1865. The first school west of Indianapolis closed due to lack of money in 1859 and two more schools were established before being closed again due to lack of funds between 1863-1868. In 1870 there were twenty-one schools with a total enrollment of 4,711 students according to school directory information from that year. A new high school (the present Decatur High School) was built on North Fourth Street betweennutt and Clark Streets in 1903 after another fire destroyed several buildings within blocks of the original high school building on Third Street. A new gymnasium (now known asdecatur basketball arena) replaced the old gymnasium on West Main Street in 1924 following a local ice rink's closure during World War II which left Decatur without an ice rink for over thirty years! In 1955, General Motors announced plans to build a large plant south of town across from what is now Motorola Solutions headquarters; however no construction began until 1957 when Gates Rubber Co., Inc.'s plant opened nearby followed by Chrysler Corporation's plant east of town beginning operations in 1960. This made Decatur one of only three cities located outside metropolitan Chicago that saw heavy industrial development during this time period – along with Lansing, Michigan and Pontiac, Michigan which all became major metropolitan areas during this same time period. By 1970 there were thirteen businesses operating out of City Hall with nineteen employees including four police officers/firefighters! In 1984 GMpany ended their lease at their previous facility south of town leaving behind an empty lot which served as the site for what is now McCormick Place Stadium which hosted both American River College men’s tennis & women’s tennis programs until 1997 when they moved into JanSport Arena which also hosts events such as college football games & concerts through 2019! In 1993 TIAA-CREF sold its assets back to GM who then vacated the property making way for McCormick Place Stadium once again housing various events throughout Decatur including US Open Tennis Championships & U2 concerts! TodayDecatur has become one Of America’s Most Grown Cities With Over 14K residents residing within its borders! Decatur, Ill., is a city of 111,000 people located in Decatur County, Illinois. The population was estimated at 114,675 as of the 2010 census. Nicknamed "The City of Eternal Peace" because it has been without a fire in over 100 years, Decatur is known for its manufacturing and agricultural industries, as well as its vibrant artistic community. The city is also home to the National Museum of American History and the Illinois Institute of Technology. The first Europeans to reach what is now Decatur were French explorers in 1678 who named it Pointe-à-Pitre after a cape on the west side of Lake Michigan. A fur trading post was established by the Peoria brothers in 1763 at what is now Moultrie Street and Weller Road. In 1813, General John Brown's raid against Fort Dearborn caused the evacuation of many settlers from what became Decatur Township. Following Brown's ignominious death at Battle Creek on October 5, 1836 (the day before his funeral), General David Potter assumed command of Union forces marching against him at Prairie du Chien and renamed all townships east of Chicagoafter generals in Washington's army—Providence Township (now West Side), Pottersville (now Lincoln Avenue), Davison Heights (now Harlem Park), Ottawa Heights (now Irving Place), Greeneville Heights (now Pershing Square) and Fulton Heights (now Roosevelt Avenue). In 1840, Potter founded Harper's Ferry Ferry with frontier traders Moses Samuel Potter and James Winchester to supply travelers on the Cumberland Trail with goods from Kentucky to Ohio. Harper's Ferry became an important transportation artery for settlers traveling through this region during the early part of modern America. In 1856, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president on a ticket that included slavery reformers such as Stephen Douglas and Salmon P. Chase Jr., Decatur residents responded enthusiastically to his candidacy by hosting a public meeting which selected him as their candidate for Ulysses S Grant's unsuccessful presidential election campaign that year. After Grant won reelection in 1860 after defeating Confederate general Robert E Lee within two months of being elected president with help from local Republicans under then new rules allowing indirect election voting due to popular support for Union candidates nationwide following the Civil War (), he returned briefly to live in Springfield before moving permanently into Washington D.'C., where he served as secretary of war under President Andrew Johnson between 1865–1868 (). On November 3rd 1870 – one week after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated – Octave Chanute gave birth to his son George Washington Chanute here at Noontime Hospital near First Street & Court Avenue in present day Indianola Shopping Center across First from McCormick Place Theatre District.) successive Presidents have honored George Washington Chanute Day each year since then including Franklin D Roosevelt who signs legislation recognizing it annually on April 14th; Harry S Truman; Richard Nixon; Gerald Ford; Jimmy Carter
