Decatur is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Decatur County. The population was 66,811 at the 2010 census, making it the sixth-largest city in Illinois. It is located on the southern border of Cook County and is bordered by St. Clair County to the east, Kane County to the north, and Indiana to the west. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Decatur were Frenchmen who established a trading post there in 1812. After years of discussion, Congress passed an act authorizing construction of a fortification line along what is now State Route 6 in 1816; but no fort was erected and no town was founded until 1840 when John Blythe donated land for a courthouse and market square. In 1851, General James K. Polk ordered all federal troops out of Illinois due to increasing tensions with Mexico; however, local officials quickly organized militias to resist Polk's order and Fort Dearborn was built instead. In 1861, Confederateeyer General David Swayne surrendered his army at Stone Bridge outside Decatur after Union forces advanced into that county; this event led to increased military activity around Decatur and made it an important supply stop for Confederate forces during their southward march through central Illinois during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1870, Judge Augustus Hodge purchased 10 acres (40 hectares) southeast of present day downtown Decatur from Jesse Lummis for $1 million dollars as part of his donation towards building Chicago's Michigan Avenue artery system; he named this area "Hodge Park". After Hodge's death in 1886 his estate passed through several hands before being sold to Jens Weichselbaum in 1923 who renamed it "Weichselbaum Park" after himself and his wife Elsa Weichselbaum (1881-1966), daughter of German immigrants Gustav Weischselbaum and Clara Schleichert von Lobenstein de la Tour d'Athènes (1914-1985). During World War II many factories were located within or near downtown Decatur including Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company which manufactured tires for Army vehicles as well as Boeing Aircraft Manufacturing Plant No. 1 where more than 1 million planes were made between 1941-1945 alone! The war also led to mass layoffs throughout many industries throughout Cook County resulting from production quotas set by government planners.; however most people returned home once hostilities ended on September 2nd 1945 In 1957 Exxon Mobil Corporation relocated its corporate headquarters from Dallas, Texas across I-75 North from Chicago into a new facility just off Interstate 95 east side called Iger Field which still stands today! Decatur, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 21,822 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Decatur Township and La Grange Township. Decatur was founded in 1836 by John C. Frémont as the site of an Indian trading post called Fort Dearborn. In 1841, General Zachary Taylor moved his Headquarters from Vandalia to Decatur and it became the seat of government for what is now Cook County. The first school in Decatur was built on the same spot where present-day Western High School stands today in 1867. A new high school was built in 1922 and served as both a junior and senior high school until 1971 when it became Stevenson-Reed High School. In 1967, Mayor Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin attended a meeting to discuss plans for an airport which would be later renamed after him - Aldrin Airport. At that time there were only two airports in Illinois - Chicago's Midway Airport and at Peoria Naval Air Station - so Aldrin's visit marked the beginning of what would eventually become one of America's largest airport systems with more than 60 airports nationwide!
