Darien, Illinois is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Darien was founded in 1847 by Abram Griggs and his wife Lydia Griggs as a small cluster of log cabins on the then-flat land between Armour and Cicero Avenues. The town grew rapidly due to its location near two large water sources: the DuPage River and Lake Michigan. In 1875, Griggs donated 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land to what became known as Park Ridge Estates for use as a suburb of Chicago. In 1907, Griggs' grandson George Wirth gifted another 500 acres (200 hectares) to Darien Township for use as an agricultural community. The township's first store was built in 1909 on North Main Street across from the current Municipal Building. The City of Darien was incorporated on December 12, 1914 with a population of 711 residents; its first mayor was John Buford Fuller (1914-1920).
