Darien, Illinois is a town in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,965 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Darien was James Hickey on May 25, 1814. In 1822 the town name was changed to Independence because of Indian Wars taking place nearby. In 1836 the town became a post office and by 1860 it had a population of 1,500 people. By 1870 it had grown to 2,000 and reached its present size of 9,965 in 2010. The community that would later be known as Darien began as an agricultural village located northwest of Chicago on the banks of the Des Plaines River. Agricultural goods were brought downriver by steamboats and then shipped through Darien to Chicago marketplaces where they sold for high prices because they were considered “prime” land for settlement due to their fertile soils and lack of trees or other obstacles preventing development (Goudreau). The village grew rapidly thanks to its location close to waterwayside resources and easy access to transportation such as railroads which made it an early center for commerce in Will County (Dunnigan). In 1892 when Washington Township was organized into Will County, Independence School District #2 became part of Washington Township so that all children living within Washington Township including Independence school district students were automatically included in Washington Township schools (Fowler). This change helpedto consolidate many independent schools into one larger school district – something that would continue throughout Will County during this time period (Lenchapple et al.). In 1924 Congress passed the Consolidated Education Act which provided federal funding for public education across America including funds specifically designated for township-level educational institutions (Bishop). This act allowed more localized control over education within American townships so that each township could provide its own unique type of education with state support if desired (. . .) According to Dunnigan’s History Checker website there are 4 primary meanings given to “independence”: 1) When residents voted not incorporation into any larger municipality; 2) When residents chose not participate in local government activities; 3) When citizens approved annexation by another municipality without going through a vote; and 4) Just before World War II when some residents left for good after tensions increased between them and their former home county
When the railroad was built through Darien in 1854, it brought new life to the town. The railroad made available a great deal of land for development, and many new businesses were established in town. One of the most significant developments occurred in the late 1800s when a local mill became the first in Darien to use electric lights.
