The Coast Guard was established in 1915 as the Harbor Defenses Division of the War Department. On December 14, 1917, the Coast Guard became a separate service within the United States Army and was designated as the 6th Military District. In 1938, additional detachments were activated along the Eastern seaboard and at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The first coast guard station in Darien was built on Island No. 2 in 1935 and by 1941 there were six coast guard stations across Illinois including one at Galesburg. In 1947, Congress created the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under President Harry S Truman with jurisdiction over all aspects of maritime safety including coastal security. As part of this reorganization, both agencies were consolidated into one organization known as NOAA’s Office of National Intelligence which is headquartered at Arlington House on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C.. Thedivision responsible for coastal security now falls within the newly merged Headquarters Directorate for counterterrorism within U.S. Cyber Command which has responsibility for homeland defense issues.. Darien, Illinois is a small town located in Sangamon County, Illinois. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Quad Cities Metropolitan Area. The village of Darien was founded in 1848 and named after General John CD Howe who fought in the Mexican-American War. The original plan for the town called for it to be called "Davenport," but because of its location on the Chicago side of Union Pacific Railroad tracks, the name was changed to Darien after General John CD Howe's victory at Battle of Deerfield Heights in 1856. Darien is home to three schools: East High School, West High School and South Central High School. All three schools offer four-year graduation rates that are above 80%. In addition, East High School has won state championships in football and basketball while West High School has won state championships in soccer and wrestling. The first post office opened in 1851 and remained open until it closed in 1966. The current post office building was built in 1967 and serves as headquarters for the Darien Village Hall Association which helps maintain several local businesses including a grocery store, bakery, bowling alley and restaurant. In 2009, DARIE (Darien Area Recovery Education) began providing alcohol rehabilitation services to area residents following a city ordinance that forbid such services from being provided within 500 feet of any liquor store or entertainment complex unless those areas were specifically approved by a separate board representing business owners/landlords with an interest therein). This service provides hope to people struggling with alcoholism who may not have access to traditional treatment options available within their community or region

Darien, Illinois is a town in Peoria County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2000 census. Darien's history goes back to 1837 when it was founded as a small farming community by Methodist missionaries. It grew rapidly after the opening of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in 1854, and by 1870 Darien had an population of 2,000 people. The town experienced rapid development after incorporation as a city in 1871. In 1907, Darien became one of the original towns in what is now Cook County. The Rapid City Steel Works closed in 1957 and most of the mills have since been destroyed or converted into housing developments. However, some extant buildings including the First Presbyterian Church remain standing on Main Street in downtown Darien.
