In 1851, the United States Army moved to Darien, Illinois. The first barracks were erected in 1852 and the U.S. Military Academy was founded in 1864. In 1868, the army's 1st Infantry Regiment was stationed at Fort Sheridan on Chicago's North Side and in 1870 it became a battery of artillery regiment No. 4th Artillery Brigade (1st Division). The 1st Infantry Regiment served in numerous campaigns during the American Civil War including battles such as Chancellorsville and Gettysburg; it also took part in operations against Native Americans and Mexican rebels. Following the war, the regiment was mustered out of service in 1865. The 1st Infantry Regiment re-enlisted for another nine years after being called back into service during World War I (1914-1918). It fought various engagements including Meuse-Argonne, Arras and Aisne; also participating were World War II campaigns such as Normandy, Southern France and Berlin; finally discharged from military service at Camp Kilmer NJ on October 15th 1945. Since its disbandment in 1945, many members of this defunct regiment have passed down their memories of this once mighty organization within Darien community – some still active duty soldiers who live nearby or alumni who attend college near by. Darien, Illinois is a town in Lake County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,662 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Darien comes from Indian words meaning "founded on a hill." The first people to live in what is now Darien were the Potawatomi and they called it Kasee-wandaa (Powhatan word meaning "hillock"). In 1812, Daniel Boone and his party journeyed through this area when they were exploring the new country west of Chicago. They named their small settlement after General James K. Polk who had brought over many settlers to that part of Illinois. The town was platted in 1838 by John Templeton with land bought from the Potawatomi for $800 cash and another $200 worth of goods pledged as security. In 1841, when Missouri became an independent state, much of what is now Lake County was included in that state including Darien which meant that it became part of the newly created county seat of Cook County. However, due to its location on a scenic bend in the river which made for good hunting grounds during times when Springfield lay upstream and because there was no railroads near by, little development took place until after World War II when a few businesses located here began to expand into other parts of town such as marketing services and real estate sales/purchasing
