Danville is a city located in the state of Illinois. The population was 24,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. Danville was founded on May 7, 1836, by Dr. Daniel Boone and his brother Elijah Boone. It is named after General Sam Houston who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as governor of Texas from 1845 to 1846. The first settler in Danville was John Stephenson, who arrived in 1837. In 1840, George Rapp (1795-1860) purchased land near present day Main Street and White Road for $600 dollars. He built a small log cabin which he named "Rapp's Cabin." His daughter Sophia (1840-1911) married Amos Kendall (1800-1855), an attorney and member of the Illinois House of Representatives from Danville Township, Ill., in 1847. Amos Kendall donated land to the town for school purposes and also developed potatoes for sale on Creek Road west of town center beginning in 1850. In 1861,Dr William Moseley settled east of town along what is now Missouri Avenue with his family south of present day First Ward on some 640 acres encompassing much of what remains today within Danville limits northward to Racine Avenue – including much abandonment since then! The Moseleys were among early settlers who helped develop agriculture hereabouts; one account reports that they raised 120 bushels per acre on their 160 acres! That same year saw another early settler arrive when James Hinton moved into a farm three miles southeast of town along present day Racine Avenue – it would be Hinton’s home until his death thereon in 1865! In 1870 Elisha Dickinson arrived with his family soon thereafter bringing additional prosperity to this area via grain storage facilities being erected thereon; these continue to serve as anchorstones for many years afterwards! A post office called “Danville” opened on October 10th, 1872 under direction from Colonel Augustus Biddle USMC (1868-1942). At that time it consisted onlyof two rooms inside an old bank building at 5 North Market Streets – postage stamps from that date bear this address! The first postmaster general listed was Jno Aikens; however he resigned less than two months later due to health concerns!! Numerous other changes followed until 1915 when mail services were discontinued entirely following World War I!!! Some noteworthy residents during those eras include: Will Rogers Sr., columnist and author; former Mayor John Fetterman (served 1961-1985); Congressman Edwin Meese III (1981-.1987); Mrs Beverly Freytag Heckelmeyer(1920-.2001); Harold Wirthhert(1909-.2006)…the list goes ON & ON !!
