Danville is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois, on the Dan River. The population was 61,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located near both Chicago's downtown and O'Hare International Airport. The name "Danville" derived from the French word "Danegeorges", meaning "town on the Dane." The first permanent European settlers in what is now Danville were French immigrants who arrived in 1763 as part of a group led by Pierre-Jacques Marquette. They built a small trading post called Fort Dearborn on current State Street near present day White Hall Square, which they named for their Duke of Orleans, Louis XV's brother-in-law and predecessor as King of France. In 1812, Andrew Johnson became president of America and ordered all US citizens to remove all British subjects from American soil except those owning land within three miles (5 km) of any military installation or arsenal. This order caused many people in northern Illinois to leave their homes and move to northwestern Indiana or southeastern Ohio; however, some Irishmen decided to stay and start a new settlement called Danville after hearing about Johnson's order from friends back home in Ireland. The first settler in what is now Danville was Antoine Rousselle who arrived with his family in 1764 when he purchased land from the local Potawatomi Chief Tecumseh around present day West Side Drive and North Avenue Streets. He named his new town after one of his kinsmen, François Daniel de la Rochefoucauld (1729–1802), Sieur d'Aubigny - also known as Father Jacques Marquette - missionary general during Jesuits' final mission among Native Americans at Kaskaskia County Courthouse (now Racine) between October 16, 1774–March 3, 1775 under leadership of Jean Baptiste Point du Sable (1694–1760). After Father Jacques Marquette's death at Kaskaskia on October 9th following an illness brought on by exposure to cholera pandemic then raging across much of North America – including parts adjacent to modern Danville – Antoine Rousselle took over leadership responsibility for expanding Jesuit missions among various Illini nations until his ultimate death some time before December 1st 1800 while serving as superior general for Catholic Missions Northwest inside what is now Wisconsin Territory

The railroad reached Danville by way of Carbondale on October 4,1869, making it a boomtown during the nineteenth century. In 1907, Danville became one of twelve towns in Cook County that were consolidated with the city of Chicago to form the City of Chicago annexed area. During World War II, Danville played an important role as an ammunition dump for General Motors plants across northern Illinois due to its strategic location between two major manufacturing centers – Detroit and St Louis. Despite this importance to GM, Danville's economy slowly began to decline after 1945 as other nearby communities grew more industrialized and/or faster-growing than Danville. However, there has been recent news and development activity involving some new businesses being started or investment being made within minutes' walk of most residents' homes which could revive danvilite's dormant economy if given enough time
