The community started off as a small settlement on the banks of the Des Plaines River. In 1839, John Neely Bryan bought 8 acres near what is now downtown Danville from John Milton Kelley for $2 per acre. At first it was just a farming village with only ten residents. By 1860, there were over 100 people living in Danville. In 1870, Perry & Shewfelt built a flour mill on the south side of Des Plaines River where present day Elm Street meets US Highway 62nd Avenue. This mill made paper products such as envelopes and postcards popular among consumers in Chicago at this time. The mill continued operations until 1902 when it burned down due to fire suppression measures being put into place during prohibition years in America . In 1907-1908 George Fenton designed and built an addition to the old flour mill which housed his photography studio known today as Fenton Photography Annexe which still stands today across from Elm Street United Methodist Church (now First Unitarian Church).
