Danville is a city located in Danville County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,651 at the 2010 census. The city is the seat of Danville Township. It lies on the east bank of the Kankakee River and is bordered to the southeast by Rome Township, to the north by Buffalo Grove Township, and to the west by Thornton. The first reference to a town in this area can be traced back to 1812 when John Stephenson founded a small village named after himself about two miles east of present-day Danville on what is now known as Stephenson Road. In 1821, Stephenson's brother James started an agricultural community named Easton which grew rapidly until it too was abandoned in 1825 following Indian War hostilities. In 1833, Daniel Webster moved from Westchester County, New York and bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of land south of Stephenson Road for $250 per acre (1 ha). He built a cabin there which he called "Webster House". Webster sold his interest in Easton in 1840 to Gideon Welles who renamed it "Wellesburg". Wellesburg became part of Danville in 1850 when that county was divided between Bloomington and Vandalia counties. The first school within reach of Danville residents was erected on property donated by George Wetherbee near modern day Elmhurst Avenue and Delaware Street in1884; it served students from kindergarten through twelfth grade at that time. A new school building was completed on North Main Street nearpresent day Hubbard Avenue in 1903; that building served students from kindergarten through eighth grade until it burned down in 1966. That event left danvillians with their only public education options being private academies beginning during World War II when public schools were closed due to wartime constraints; however those private academies continued until they were discontinued during the late 1960s whenDanville received its charter as an incorporated city under Illinois law..
