The Coast Guard in Danville, Illinois began its history in 1892. The first coast guard station in the town was erected at the current location of the Danville Police Department. In 1905, a new station was constructed on the bluff overlooking the Danville Harbor. The first captain of this Station was George A. Brownell. In 1916, a boatyard and dock were built on UpperClinton Street by the Danville Board of Education for use by local fishermen. This company remained in operation until 1922 when it became part of the National Fish Commission and ceased operations. In 1927, Captain John Naylor took command of Coast Guard Station 2nd Battalion located at York Road Bridgehead. By 1945, all seven stations manned by coast guard personnel had been destroyed during World War II with only one unit still functioning – Coastal Security Squadron 1 located at Northport Schoolhouse which continued operations into 1946 after being decommissioned from service due to budget cuts coming through during that year . A decision was made early in 1948 to convert all seven stations into an emergency patrol squadron under command of First Lieutenant Commander Jerald Wickerham with duties including providing security for area airports while rescue services provided medical assistance during disasters or other emergencies .
