The Danville Army Post Office was established in 1868. The post office was moved to its current location on State Street in 1886 and the present building was built in 1941. The post office is a brick structure with a slate roof. It has a porch, two square fireplaces, and an attached garage. There are fourTue sign panels on the facade. In 1942, the United StatesArmy transferred responsibility for the Post Office from the Illinois National Guard to the Danville Army Post Office. On November 1st of that year, Lieutenant Colonel Roy Winton assumed command of the army's units stationed in Danville. The first mail brought into town from Fort Sam Houston was received by Lieutenant Colonel Winton at the Post Office on December 6th. The first package sent out from Danville arrived at Ft San Antonio on January 2nd of 1943. On July 15th of 1945, General Dwight D Eisenhower ordered all American troops withdrawn from Europe and asked for their help in consolidating service posts throughout Germany and Austria so that these areas could be placed under military control without being used as bases for United States forces overseas. On September 15th of that year, General Eisenhower issued orders again transferring responsibility for allpost offices within Germany to Headquarters Sixth U S Army Commander which includedDanville Army Post Office. This order coincided with World War II's end and marked the beginning of civilian control overPost Offices within Germany effective October 1st 1945

Danville is a small town in Illinois, located about 15 miles southwest of Chicago. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. Danville was founded in 1839 by wagon drivers and their families who crossed the Mississippi River from Missouri to get to Illinois. The first school in Danville was built on the site of what is now the town square. In 1841, Mechanics Institute moved to Danville from Racine, Wisconsin and opened its doors to students from all over Illinois. In 1855, the Kankakee Railroad came through Danville and started shipping goods eastward from nearby wagons on their way to Springfield. This new industry brought more people and businesses into town and helped spur development around downtown. During World War II, Danville played an important role as one of several military sites in central Illinois where munitions were produced for use in the war effort. The local paper mill also played a significant role during this time as did various factories that operated within or neartown limits.
Danville was founded in 1837 by Jedediah Smith and his family. The town was named for General David Danforth, who had led the Illinois brigade that participated in the Battle of Black Hawk. The first school in Danville was built on the site of modern day UIUC. In 1841, a sawmill and gristmill were built and began to produce lumber. In 1847, a post office was established in Danville and remained in operation until 1865. In 1848, a Methodist church was constructed in Danville. In 1860, the first railroad tracks were laid through Danville by the Chicago & North Western Railroad. danvilletown is located within the town limits of Danville.
