Crestwood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the banks of the Chicago River. The population was 9,818 at the 2000 census. As of the 2010 census, there were 10,651 people living in Crestwood. Crestwood was founded in 1847 as a clearing for farming and timbering operations on the north side of the river by John A. Cullinan and his wife Sarah Ann (née Beaumont). The first policemen who served in Crestwood were Daniel Ryan and James Fentonpatrick. The first sworn officer to serve in Crestwood was Frank Hickey on November 6, 1892. In 1914; Wm Jeter became captain and continued until he retired on January 1, 1947. On July 1, 1922; Nellie Murdock became Captain with immediate effective date. On October 15th 1906; an order from President Theodore Roosevelt appointing Joe Lynch as Police Officer #1 arrived at the station house bearing his name inscribed above it with "Joe Lynch - Policeman". This was also when crestwood's first metal detector was purchased which has been used continuously ever since! Detective Sergeant Harry McCormick who patrolled crosstown traffic during prohibitionserved as our first black police officer when he joined us May 5th 1929 serving until December 3rd 1933 A few years ago we had a gift history exhibit about our local policeman souvenirs which can be found outside of the police department building starting Friday Oct 17th through Sunday Oct 19th from 10am to 4pm

Crestwood, Illinois is a small town located in the southcentral portion of the U.S. state of Illinois. It is home to about 2,500 residents and covers an area of just under square miles (5 km²). The population growth rate for Crestwood over the past decade has been much faster than the statewide average and it is predicted that by 2020 it will have more people than Athens, Illinois. Crestwood was founded in 1837 as a result of the importation of several hundred pioneers from England by General John J. Pershing during his Mexican-American War campaign. The town was named for Colonel George Washington Sherman, one of Pershing's army commanders in Mexico City. In 1847, Sherman donated land to make up what would become Crestwood Township and organized its first school into a district on November 15th, 1847. The community developed rapidly due to its location at the crossroads between two main trade routes: The Chicago & Northwestern Railway (later CSX) ran through Crestwood proper and Highway 43 connected it with Springfield via both roads; and there were also numerous farmers who operated springheads westward up the Kankakee River which served as a supply center for their agriculture operations east of Crestwood. By 1860, there were 1 store and six homes in Crestwood; by 1870, there were 12 stores and 100 homes; by 1880, there were 204 stores and 1,563 homes; and by 1890, there were 3stores/10 homes/sq m

The name comes from the crest of a hill that once stood in the town site. The first post office in Crestwood was established on July 14, 1847, by J. L. Hickey. It served residents of the village until May 1, 1860, when it was moved to nearby Decatur and reopened on that date. In 1908, Crestwood became an incorporated town after being approved by the village board of trustees. One notable resident of Crestwood during its early years included Drury Rogers Sr., who operated a successful dental practice there from 1857 until his death in 1907. Rogers had also been mayor of Decatur from 1868 until his resignation due to health concerns two years earlier
