The history of Crestwood goes back to 1836 when three brothers, Nicholas, John and Michael Crestwood founded the village of Crestwood on land they had purchased from the Hennepin County government. The first settlers were farmers and their families who operated subsistence farms until 1901 when a railroad station was built and served by freight trains transporting goods from Chicago to out-of-state markets. In 1912, crestwoods annexation by Elgin made it an incorporated Village with hispanic residents as well as white Americans living there became permanent residents. Today's economy is based on agriculture which has been an important factor in its culture for many years because it employs nearly 60% of town's workforce including 20% of its total retail sales revenue. Agriculture also provides most of the town's drinking water and most jobs are within a few miles of downtown where restaurants, hotels/motels and other businesses line up along Michigan Avenue just north of downtown parkland called Cermak Park which includes one elementary school, three churches (St Andrew’s Episcopal Church & Reformed Baptist Church; First Presbyterian Church & Christ Episcopal Cathedral), two libraries (one public library; one private library) and four parks (Crestwood Municipal Golf Course; Cermak Park; Northwestern High School Gymnasium; Western Springs). There are also several dozen small businesses that generate Employment Tax Income for the village but no property tax income because all parcels in town straddle Cook County lines - meaning paying taxes on properties located inside Cook county would be unconstitutional under state law!
